Search is full of ads and wrong answers. Every other email is an ad. Prime Video charges you and shows ads. Paramount? Ads. Peacock? YouTube? Hulu? Ads followed by more ads. Netflix full of ads. Meta and X, every other thing is an ad. Pinterest is nothing but ads. AI is in everything. AI finishes sentences incorrectly and won’t stop. AI reads your email and search history to target you with more ads. Every time you open an app or visit a site there’s an update making it worse. In a hurry? First, click here to agree to terms you don’t have time to read and must accept. You need an account to do that. Change your temporary password. Enter your 2FA code. Check your email and enter that code. Now use a passkey. Your password is too simple to remember. Change it. No, not like that. Now log on. Enter your 2FA code. Check your email for a code… Welcome back! We’ve updated our terms of service and privacy policy (you have none). Subscribe to the site. Subscribe to Netflix. Subscribe to toilet paper. Subscribe to these groceries. Pay a membership fee for the right to subscribe then tip your driver who delivers the subscriptions your membership lets you subscribe to. Time to work? We’ve got to update your laptop and will slow down everything you do until you agree to update. But first, click here to agree. Update installed — your laptop’s broken now. It doesn’t matter, since your boss just replaced you with AI. Go to your phone to complain on social media. Wait, your phone needs an update so we can add more AI. Click here. Oh sorry, your phone can’t handle this update. Now it’s useless. Go get the newest phone. Here’s a text from a friend, an email, a voice mail they left three days ago but you didn’t see until now because of sync problems with the cloud. It’s their GoFundMe. Their MLM. Their Patreon. Never mind, you didn’t respond to their text within 9 minutes and now you’re no longer friends. They blocked you. Make new friends. Download this app to find people in your area. In your neighborhood. On your street. Two doors down from you. Do you know this person yet, we think you’d get along. You need an account to use this app. That username is taken. Enter a password. Not that one, you used it on another site. You need to be connected to WiFi to download the app. Allow the app to connect to other devices on your network. Allow the app to access your contacts, know your precise location, store your credit card details. Oops, sorry, we got hacked now all that info is available on the web. There’s a class action suit. You can join. It’ll take a decade to get your $3.73 share of the ten billion settlement. We’ll send it via PayPal or deposit it to your bank, just tell us those details. Oh no, another hack. That info is circulating now, too. Here’s a spam call, a spam email, a spam text. Why are you angry? Why are you talking about getting rid of your phone? Why don’t you like AI, it lets us make all of this easier? Do you know how ridiculous that sounds? This is progress. You’ll be left behind. Do you want to be left behind? Do you???

this was the most important Oscar speech of the night tbh "Mr. Nobody Against Putin is about how you lose your country. What we saw when working with this footage is that you lose it through countless small, little acts of complicity: when we act complicit when a government murders people on the streets of our major cities, when we don't say anything when oligarchs take over the media and control how we can produce it and consume it, we all face a moral choice. But luckily even a nobody is more powerful than you think."

Billionaire @lloydblankfein seems to have stumbled onto a realization that most of his fellow oligarchs haven’t figured out.

🚨 Trump just bombed Iran’s freshwater desalination plants on Qeshm Island and took credit for it. 30 villages now have no clean water. Not a military base. Not a weapons depot. Not a missile launcher. The water supply. An elementary school. A boys’ school. A civilian airport. Oil depots. And now the freshwater supply for 30 villages. The White House official said the goal is to seize “all the oil.” Hegseth said “the only ones that need to be worried are Iranians that think they’re going to live.” Attacking civilian water infrastructure is a war crime under the Geneva Conventions. Full stop.

@sweetpeaxxo @MikeNellis No Dems, House or Senate, voted in favor of the “Big Beautiful Bill,” which provided the additional $75 billion for ICE. Mike is referring to a Senate amendment to repeal that specific $75B. It failed despite all Senate Dems voting in support yesterday. newsweek.com/two-republican…

I had to guess that it's Benson Boone in an Instacart ad with Ben Stiller and then struggled to explain who Benson Boone is to my dad. "He does backflips when he's performing" is all I got.

@RepJeffries @SenSchumer @HouseDemocrats @SenateDems citizens are under assault by the fed government and you are complicit every moment you pretend you have no power or can only make concessions on funding. Diplomacy and soft agreements count for nothing with the Trump admin.

@RepJeffries @SenSchumer @HouseDemocrats @SenateDems—this is weak and demoralizing for Minnesotans doing part of YOUR job in standing up to authoritarianism and fascism. If you’re truly concerned about burdened local resources, then find ways to unburden them AND be on the ground

if you’re wondering why the agents went straight to killing, i must remind you that in kristi noem’s own words, “our officer followed his training, did exactly what he's been taught to do in that situation.”

American tech billionaires are making a calculated bet on fascism. They believe they can control a dictator in exchange for deregulation and total market dominance. They don't care about your rights or the constitution. They only care about securing their own power

Alex Pretti, a man with no political power at all, had more moral and physical courage in the tip of his pinky finger than 99% of our political "leaders" have all together
Taniel@Taniel

Alex Pretti’s dad: “He cared about people deeply & was very upset with what was happening... He thought it was terrible, you know, kidnapping children, just grabbing people off the street. He cared about those people, and he knew it was wrong, so he did participate in protests.”

From a pamphlet from the U.S. govt to Army personnel in 1945 about fascism: “[Fascists] make their own rules and change them when they choose…. They maintain themselves in power by use of force combined with propaganda based on primitive ideas of ‘blood’ and ‘race,’ by skillful manipulation of fear and hate, and by false promise of security. The propaganda glorifies war and insists it is smart and ‘realistic’ to be pitiless and violent.” Yes, the U.S. govt is fascist. Courtesy of Heather Cox-Richardson.
