But before any of that — the devil tried to break her. It started with a prayer. Catherine had asked God for one specific gift: fortitude. God answered her prayer. And then He let hell loose on her. The demons came at her with the most humiliating temptations a young woman can be subjected to. Filthy images. Unclean visions. Day and night, awake and asleep — they would not stop. She fought back. Iron chain under her clothes. Fasting. No sleep. It didn't work. So the demons changed tactics. They stopped screaming. They started reasoning. They appeared to her as kind, concerned friends: "Poor little one, why torture yourself? You're young. Even Sarah and Rebecca and Rachel were married saints — why pick a life you can't possibly persevere in?" Catherine had one answer for every argument: "I trust in the arm of the Lord, not in mine." That's it. That's all she would say. Because she had already learned the rule every Catholic needs: Never argue with the devil. He wins by the subtlety of his reasoning. When the demons saw she wouldn't debate, they unleashed something worse. Screams. Phantoms. Spiritual filth pouring through senses she could not close. Christ, who had been visiting her constantly, was gone. No voice. No presence. No relief, visible or invisible. Just Catherine. And the demons. And silence. She didn't quit. The demons fled in shame. A great light filled her room. And in the middle of the light — Jesus Christ appeared. As He was on the Cross. Bleeding. This is where Catherine — exhausted, violated, abandoned — asked Him the question every suffering Catholic has wanted to ask since the beginning of time: "Lord… where were You? Where were You when my heart was being tormented?" And Jesus said: "I was in the midst of thy heart." Catherine struggled to accept it. "Lord, You are everlasting Truth — but how can I believe You were in my heart when it was filled with such detestable thoughts?" Jesus answered with a question of His own. "Did those thoughts give you pleasure — or pain?" "Pain, Lord. Excessive pain and sadness." And then He delivered the line that should end every Catholic's confusion about temptation forever: "You were in pain because I was hidden in the midst of your heart. Had I been absent, those thoughts would have filled you with joy. But My presence rendered them insupportable to you." Read that again. The fact that the temptation pained her — the fact that it disgusted her — was the proof Christ was inside her. If He had abandoned her, she would have enjoyed the filth. The horror itself was the evidence of His presence. Listen to me, If you are being hammered with temptation right now — If your mind is filled with thoughts that horrify you — If you hate what keeps surfacing — Hatred of the temptation is the proof He has not left. The disgust shows His presence. The demons attack the city from the outside — Because the King is inside the walls. Pray. Don't argue with them. Don't negotiate. Don't lessen your devotions — multiply them. And the next time hell comes for you, look it in the eye and say what a 23-year-old girl from Siena once said: "I have chosen sufferings for my consolation. Do your worst — for the love of my Jesus." Hell will flee. And even if you walk away from that battle feeling disgusted, violated, and exhausted — hear this: As long as you endured it faithfully, you are blessed. You did not displease Him. You delighted Him. The filth did not stain your soul — your refusal of it crowned your soul. The exhaustion is not weakness — it is the weight of a heart that fought for its King.
