MESSAGE I wholeheartedly endorse the powerful appeal for peace made by the Holy Father, Pope Leo, during his Palm Sunday Mass. His call for the laying down of arms and the renunciation of violence resonated profoundly with me, as it speaks to the very essence of what all major religions teach. Indeed, whether we look to Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, Judaism or any of the world's great spiritual traditions, the message is fundamentally the same: love, compassion, tolerance, and self-discipline. Violence finds no true home in any of these teachings. History has shown us time and again that violence only begets more violence and is never a lasting foundation for peace. An enduring resolution to conflict, including the ones we see in the Middle East or between Russia and Ukraine, must be rooted in dialogue, diplomacy and mutual respect — approached with the understanding that, at the deepest level, we are all brothers and sisters. For too long, Australian authorities have turned a blind eye to rising antisemitism. On Saturday, a teenager in Victoria was attacked for wearing a yarmulke and carrying an Israeli flag. I thank Victoria Police for investigating this cowardly attack and urge them to hold the perpetrator accountable.

Sussan Ley deserves to be well remembered as the 16th leader of the Liberal Party, a successful minister, and a hard working and long serving local MP. It was never going to be easy to lead the party after its worst ever defeat. Sussan showed strong character and dignity, often under great pressure. It was to her credit that she well managed the Net Zero debate and created a clear contrast with a government that’s let its emissions obsession do much economic self harm. As John Howard once said, politics is a hard and unforgiving business but it’s the highest and noblest form of public service. Sussan should be honoured for the duty she’s done and the service she’s given.

I thank Governor-General Sam Mostyn for the invitation to visit Australia and the beautiful reception in Canberra today. During our meeting, we spoke at length about the importance of the fight against antisemitism in the aftermath of the Bondi terror attack. We also discussed ways to reinvigorate relations between Israel and Australia in a wide range of fields, including technology, science, agriculture, and tourism.
