1/ A lot of people say the Bitcoin ecosystem is dead. The truth? It never stopped evolving. Ordinals and Runes might have cooled off, but Bitcoin is so much more than that. 2025 could be the year Bitcoin finally unlocks its full potential at the application layer. Here are some BTC ecosystem projects I’m keeping a close eye on 👇 2/ Alkanes – Smart contracts, the Bitcoin way Built by the @oylwallet @taggaOyl @judoflexchop , Alkanes combines elements of Ordinals and Runes, with a UTXO-based model. Its breakthrough lies in embedding contract logic directly on-chain and using indexers to simulate execution—enabling lightweight contracts without forking Bitcoin. It’s currently limited by the 80-byte OP_RETURN cap, but if that’s ever lifted, Alkanes could become the go-to framework for on-chain logic and asset interactions on BTC. 3/ @nubit_org – Native BTC payments, no channels or bridges Nubit’s core protocol, Thunderbolt, enables async, recursive, and formally verified transfers—solving Lightning’s dependency on payment channels and routing. Its goal: a truly decentralized, trustless BTC settlement layer, no bridges required. 4/ @MezoNetwork – A blueprint for a Bitcoin-native “superbank” Mezo is launching MUSD, an overcollateralized stablecoin backed by BTC, with interest rates as low as 1%. MUSD can plug into protocols like Zerolend and Curve for yield strategies and cross-chain arbitrage, helping BTCFi find real traction. Follow @KathySats for the best updates on Mezo and you will learn a lots!!! 5/ @babylonlabs_io – The BTC staking pioneer Despite some community FUD around Babylon’s airdrop, BTC staking is super expensive—and it’s a problem Babylon alone can’t solve. But as a long-term infrastructure, Babylon is still one of the most ambitious bets. The team is now laser-focused on building the on-chain staking layer for BTCFi. Worth keeping an eye on. I have deep respect for Babylon’s co-founders, @dntse and @baby_fisherman , and sincerely appreciate their dedication to advancing the long-term potential of Bitcoin. 6/ Payments: BTC’s UX is getting a major upgrade Tether is bringing USDT to Lightning—this could mark the beginning of stable, high-frequency, trust-minimized payments on Bitcoin. Stablecoin + high-frequency use + trustlessness = Bitcoin’s payment potential coming back. Props to builders like @lightning , @Breez_Tech , @alexbosworth ,@roy_breez , @MiyaharaUmi who never stopped building. Tether joining might finally bring Lightning back into the spotlight.. 7/ @buildonspark – Reimagining BTC-native payments Founded by ex-PayPal President @davidmarcus Spark is a self-custodial Lightning-based payment network on Bitcoin mainnet. Its Spark Entity (SE) model enables “minimal trust” multi-sig coordination. LRC20, its first protocol asset, is live. Spark has already partnered with Magic Eden, and the ecosystem is growing fast. 8/ @BitlayerLabs – Building a BitVM-powered L2 for Bitcoin Bitlayer is the BTC L2 based on BitVM concepts, with full EVM compatibility. Its recent collab with Sui brings Peg-BTC—a BTC-backed cross-chain asset—into Sui DeFi. This could unlock new use cases and capital efficiency for BTC holders. 9/ @botanix – A BTC Layer 2 designed for defi builders Botanix is a new BTC Layer 2 gaining strong interest from Western developers. It brings EVM compatibility to Bitcoin, enabling smart contracts and composability. The goal: let developers build DApps and protocols on Bitcoin—just like they do on Ethereum—without compromising BTC’s security. With mainnet launching soon 10/ @fiamma_labs – A pioneering experiment combining ZK and BitVM2 Fiamma focuses on integrating zero-knowledge proofs with BitVM2 to build a high-efficiency, trustless Bitcoin-native Layer 2. Its Fiamma Bridge is the first trustless BitVM BTC bridge, while the Layer itself serves as a ZK-based verification and execution environment. With an open challenger mechanism and a multi-operator model, Fiamma aims to deliver a secure and scalable Web3 infrastructure built directly on Bitcoin. I’m personally excited to see the kind of impact Fiamma could bring to the Bitcoin ecosystem. 11/ @Bitlight_wallet – early builder for the RGB ecosystem Bitlight is actively building key infrastructure for the upcoming RGB mainnet and will launch a public RGB faucet. By enabling lightweight asset creation and aligning community incentives, Bitlight empowers users to freely issue and collaborate on Bitcoin-native assets, helping accelerate the growth of the RGB ecosystem. 12/The BTC ecosystem isn’t dead—it’s just running in cycles. There are still so many incredible projects out there—but it’s getting late, so I’ll have to save the rest for another time. We’re seeing real innovation again in protocol, meme cycle, staking, payments, cross-chain DeFi, and... Let’s see what the second half of 2025 brings. The best part of the BTC ecosystem is still Bitcoin itself.
