Sometimes the best and most enduring games have nothing to do with graphical fidelity. I would argue that there are plenty of genuinely beautiful old games out there, which graphically suck by modern standards.

Why is there so much anti-LoC rhetoric? At some point, more features, edge cases, security, and reliability require more code. There’s no magic abstraction that lets you build an operating system in 500 lines. Unless you’re building a todo app, you’ll need lots of code.

@JohnH0730 @LegacyKillaHD I think the Fallout brand will guarantee far higher player counts than any of Obsidian’s in house games (and quite possibly more than even Starfield). It’s Fallout. People will play it for the name alone.

@TheManDocSmurf @Shin0a_ @MathRockSucked Even if there was a time where Hypixel was mostly adults (and I doubt that), it’s still been mostly children for like a decade atp. It’s firmly in playground territory

@Shin0a_ @MathRockSucked This would actually be more akin to the Vegas strip being inundated with 10,000 preteens and then some mothers showing up asking why there are people in gimp masks walking around at night. The Sexdogs were there first.

@ManualBreethin @REDFEILD26 I thought I was fairly clear that I'm not talking about realism. I've visited the Caribbean, I know it doesn't actually look like that, but it's a video game. The goal is to convey a mood through the (relatively) small rectangle of someone's TV, not absolute realism.

I also think the new one looks way better. The OG looks flat and harsh by comparison. Not as much nuance and detail in the image

@Alten2475 @SynthPotato None of those are particularly new mechanics. New to AC, maybe, but not particularly innovative when compared to the industry. It’s all been done before, and usually better.

@SynthPotato Origins: beginning of RPG mechanics and bird companions. Odyssey: massive battles you partake in and the Mercenary system, along with choices with consequences. Valhalla: an upgradable, evolving village. Shadows: playing as two protagonists at once. All AC has done is innovate.

Going forward, Ubisoft NEEDS to use Black Flag Resynced as their base line for quality for ALL of their future games. That means fantastic written stories with motion captured cutscenes that feature great facial animations. An action-adventure focus that avoids bloating these games with RPG mechanics and most importantly, an experience that feels cohesive and not scale for the sake of scale. Procedurally generated cutscenes simply do not cut it anymore, Ubisoft should be at the level to compete with Naughty Dog's presentation by now with their team sizes and insane budgets. It is time to bring these stories down from 90+ hour behemoths that lack substance to 30 hour LINEAR adventures that truly have something to say with a strong cast of characters just like Black Flag. A company as big as Ubisoft should not have only 1 strong writer with Darby and the rest be so mediocre, this franchise needs to bring in real talent that can write strong narratives consistently with each game just like they did in AC1-Origins. Features that are continuously improved upon, need to start carrying forward from game to game as they did here with Parkour and stealth. We should not have a Mirage to Shadows situation again where all the enhancements Mirage did to parkour and social stealth were just gone from Shadows until a year post-launch when parkour got fixed but social stealth was simply abandoned for no reason. And most importantly, Assassin's Creed needs to innovate again. Black Flag is such a breakthrough title because there really is no single player pirate game like it to this day. There is nothing like AC2, nothing like AC3 out there. but there are many games exactly like Shadows and Valhalla. Going forward, AC needs to push the envelope forward. It isn't enough to make a back to the roots game like Mirage, the formula needs to evolve. My hopes for next year's Assassin's Creed Hexe is that it does away entirely with procedurally generated cutscenes, and pushes the franchise forward with a new parkour system that finally replaces the one we've had for almost 10 years since Origins now. A game that seeks to tell a truly meaningful story with strong presentation and an open world that is focused on being fun to explore without the need of XP grinds. And most importantly, Hexe needs to have its own identity. It's easy to lump together Odyssey-Valhalla-Shadows into one gameplay loop, Hexe has to break away from that just as Black Flag Resynced did. It's not enough that Hexe ends up being an action-adventure game, it has to be a game that stands out as something truly unique in the franchise, just like how every game before Odyssey did. And these all apply to every franchise Ubisoft has. Far Cry got so big because of how incredible Far Cry 3's story was, FC6 turning its back entirely on good writing was a huge mistake and for FC7, everything I said about AC has to be applied too. I truly believe a Ubisoft comeback to their level of quality that was seen in the 360/PS3 era is possible, they have the money, they have the developers, all they have lacked all these years is structure. Something to aim these developers properly to craft a unique game. If Expedition 33 can come out of former Ubisoft devs, then I fully believe Ubisoft are capable of making games at that quality bar.

We got our first technical information of the Black Ops and Black Ops 2 ports, courtesy of Digital Foundry: - The PS5/PS4 versions are better than the one accessible on Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One - Xbox backwards compatibility version sticks to the original Xbox 360 resolution of 608p, the PS4/PS5 versions are at 1080p - Digital Foundry finds it bewildering that the PS5 version is not 4K, there is nothing preventing this version from achieving that resolution or 120hz performance - Both games have no anti-aliasing at all, which is why they have a “jagged” look - Outside of that, people have found some slightly updated assets (Like the later Ray-gun of BO2 is ported to the Victis maps) plus UI elements made to be higher resolution - BO1 & BO2 are direct ports & do not offer any real graphical enhancement aside from the 1080p resolution

@emmabeforenone @DMC_Ryan @gamerdadgg @GameOverGreggy I doubt it. There’s no real reason to do that. The whole point of doing that for Oblivion was preserving the old game logic instead of trying to port it to UE5. If they were going to use UE5 at all, they’d probably just ditch Creation Engine entirely

Thinking more about this, I think it's going to be Unreal Engine for Josh Sawyer's Fallout game. Obsidian hasn't used Creation Engine in 15+ years, and their whole tech pipeline is built around Unreal. Plus, we know Asha wants this turned around ASAP. So, UE5 is my bet.
Ryan McCaffrey@DMC_Ryan

I'll be very curious if Josh Sawyer's new Fallout game will use Unreal Engine – which is what Obsidian's entire studio uses – or if they'll pull the latest Elder Scrolls 6 version of the Creation Engine over from Bethesda. I suspect it'll be whichever gets the game made faster.

@otterthingsco @HannyahZ I don't think so? The problem with 8K support on base PS5 isn't that the hardware is theoretically incapable it's just that there's no support for it in firmware at all

@willowshorror nothing 'unfathomable' about it, the hyperbole on this app is over the top. they did a good job making it look like a shot from the technicolor age. skilled professionals should be able to do that. GL & his DP achieved something similar on the SW PT (film & digital) decades ago.

Creation Engine from Starfield with the detail and storytelling of Fallout: New Vegas with a new game set in the Fallout universe. Never been more sexually excited about an idea in my life lol You might not like Starfield, but the engine is the most stable with that game.
