@rfleury It’s been great for getting a through a lot of prototypes or experiments (focused on UX not API experimentation). For real code that I’m happy with, still lacking for me. Pretty good as an advanced code gen (applying existing patterns out) and code flow analysis though.

From what I can tell, ~100% of the “vibecoded” applications people have posted about (as opposed to targeted use of LLMs for specific language-data/wrangling related problems) are expensive toys for the people prompting for them. Users do not care in the way people keep claiming they do. And they seem to have trouble selling it to users. But I’m sure everything will be OK if they keep pouring in more investments.
Ryan Fleury@rfleury

Users don’t report higher satisfaction with “automatically programmed” apps. In fact they basically don’t use them. Faster production of more code is not meaningful to the user. Not all code is created equal. This is why teams which use LLM assistance are not going completely hands-off.

So here’s where I’m at now with alpha and my accounts and I need advice: I have 90K in profits across my 3 accounts that have now been closed and was set to take a SECOND 45K payout tomorrow. I’m left with two options: 1) go live with 3 x $4500 accounts and I can forfeit ALL OTHER PROFITS (70%) for 80% split in live OR 2) go live with 3 x $4500 accounts and take my sim profits in monthly payouts ($3400 a month for 12 months) with a 60% split in live and I lose the $3400 payments if I lose the accounts. What would you do??

I've been using grok imagine for some concept art - not bad, generates some cool images. As soon as I start to get specific about things though, it quickly breaks down and does some funny stuff. No idea how people think they can actually use this stuff in projects though.

Which stage of AI do we need to hit before I can reliably eject a USB drive from a Windows PC?

@RyanPCooke @mitchellh Well, the thing is, Claude will actually tell you that it can't create the PR. So if you do it anyways, you either don't read the AI output (which is to Mitchell's point) or you don't care (which is also to Mitchell's point).

@mitchellh your argument unavoidably boils down to, in some scenarios, humans are superior to ai at coding. even if that scenario is catching a dumb human trick. i get it, it's hard to fully embrace the idea that ai is better than you at your job. i struggle too big fan of your work btw

This implies that cities like Manhattan are actually good; I'd argue these types of cities are the exact opposite of what we should be building: local, self-sufficient communities built with walking and community structures in mind.

@Jonathan_Blow @_L_four_ @FakePsyho I ran it on my Linux laptop and the movement with keyboard felt terrible, but on the steam deck with a controller it was fine. The aesthetics of the game don’t match the control feel with a keyboard. Game is beautiful though.

@_L_four_ @FakePsyho This is something that we can tune further before release… but yeah I also don’t think trying to time based on where you are standing is really the best way to do it. But some things can be done to make it work better.

Some thoughts after finishing the demo: - In general, I have mixed feelings about the game. I loved Braid and The Witness - they were both revolutionary when they came out and had a huge impact on the puzzle genre. This game looks like something that was done multiple times in the past 10 years: minimalistic sokoban-like that has a limited ruleset that leads to an explosion of different interactions. The only difference is the size of the game. Don't get me wrong, it's still going to have a lot of amazing puzzles - a lot of great puzzle designers are involved in this game. A huge solid game, nothing more. - Despite how it was advertised, the demo is far from long and in general is on the same par as the inspiration games (Mirror Isles, Heroes of Sokoban) or worse (Promesst). - It features probably the worst movement I ever saw in a (polished) puzzle game; it's clunky, it looks ugly and often gets in a way of execution your logic. The game has a ton of traversing in various places, so it really is a major issue that never goes away. - I don't remember any puzzle game that has so much useless dialog happening. In the intro, there are multiple places where you have to stand still for prolonged time in order to not have an overlapping dialog. I feel that Jonathan Blow from the previous games, would absolutely hate that, so I'm really confused about this decision. There's an announcement that on Friday the demo will get another 35 puzzles, so I might do another stream Friday night or Saturday. And that's it. Honestly, I'm not recommending the demo, especially if you're an experienced puzzle solver. If you're looking for an interesting and approachable sokoban-like with an overworld, I highly recommend Isles of Sea and Sky instead.

Livestreaming Order of the Sinking Star at 18:00 GMT / 20:00 CEST / 2 PM ET / 11 AM PT (roughly 2h from now) - the goal is to play the game casually while talking about game design, puzzle design, and puzzle solving - I usually can't talk and do anything mentally demanding at the same time, so expect a total disaster - feel free to ask questions during the stream (even unrelated to the game) - if you're wondering why I'm doing this: I need to practice livestreaming for some unspecified reason 👀 - links ⬇️

I heard the reason why Amazon reported on Fable to the government is because Fable was unable to fix how bad AWS's UI is.

In your claim: I didn't pirate the inputs, another company did. I state this as it changes the avenue for the legal argument here. For example, if I can show that it wrote materially similar code to what I would have done, just faster, then you don't really have the transference of stolen goods argument. However, if it's writing an unpublished algorithm stolen from some private code base (or unlicensed use of), then I clearly have stolen goods in my work. Microsoft has broken many laws. Can I still use their software and expect those laws to be upheld to my works? If a company settles any wrong doing and is then allowed to continue the course, can I then use it? Or we can go with: two wrongs don't make a right. Another line of reasoning is one of "good faith". Is your game truly a derivative or unique experience or is it a direct rip-off? I use AI for coding as it speeds up development. However, I review it all and tell it to re-write stuff in a way that I want it a lot. I'd argue that is more "good faith" usage vs. a "vibe coded" game. All this said, I really wish AI models would be trained in an ethical manner to at least make this part of the AI discussion a non-issue. Here's your public domain LLM, here's your licensed LLM and this % of your fee goes to the authors, etc.

For people using AI in commercial game development: I'd be interested in hearing the best arguments as to why you think people should pay for the resulting game instead of pirating it. Concisely, if you pirated the inputs, why shouldn't they pirate the output?
