I guess it's that time of the year again. "What color is your function?" is trending again. It has been 10 years, maybe it isn't "solved" because the entire premise is faulty. Nobody asks "what color is your data structure?" Everything in a codebase is "colored".

Rust is a good example of how human behavior affects the perception of technology. While the language may be interesting (sort of: too many issues anyway), the constant insistence that everything must be rewritten with it and everything else is bad/stupid/vulnerable is a huge turn off. Lots of people don't want to deal with that toxicity.
If I cannot tolerate a GC and/or really need to use a lot of C libraries, C99 works just fine and it's not
going away any time soon.

It’s actually amazing how fucking stupid people are (mostly cheaters). The device is BLOCKED, not actually bricked. It’s a figure of speech.

There's been a lot of tech illiteracy on this today. But if you are compromising your own hardware to cheat in a video game, quite frankly, I couldn't care if they made your PC remotely detonate.

Does Vanguard physically damage hardware? No. Does this impact hardware or software in any ways unrelated to Riot’s games? No. The IOMMU security protection does not impact hardware, and would only impact the ability of players using DMA cheat devices to play our games. Are normal players affected? Players not using DMA cheat hardware are unaffected. Why target DMA cheats? DMA-based cheats are among the most sophisticated forms of cheating because they attempt to bypass traditional software detection by accessing memory directly through external hardware. I’m affected by this. How do I fix it? To continue cheating in other titles with this device, you may simply disable IOMMU in BIOS in the same place that you enabled it. Of course, you still won’t be able to play our games with these cheat devices enabled. Why did Riot joke about “bricking” PCs? We didn’t. The “paperweight” comment was about VALORANT cheat devices that no longer work in VALORANT. No hardware is being damaged and no other functionalities are impacted.

No one is pro cheater. They're anti tamper of machines. Lets talk about a hypothetical. If there was a 0.1% chance that when you started your car that it would explode, would you do it? Yes, I know that you aren't going to die if your computer gets wiped and you just have to reinstall an OS, so please excuse me acting a little extreme for the sake of a mental exercise.
Some people just aren't willing to take the risk of having their PC's corrupted by a false positive from an anti-cheat running 24/7 on a computer for a video game. Some people are. It's interesting to see people confuse that with tech literacy.

Removing expect() and unwrap() are the worst things you can do, they exist for a reason. They're assertions and you should use them more.
Just don't assert for something that can happen at runtime.

Well the false quote is phrased as if I’m taking a shot at the guy like “he’s just an indie hacker, not a real dev”, which I’m not. I just wanted to point out that there’s a difference between developing solo projects and development giant projects (and so many more differences).

With all due respect, I don’t think it is interesting.
If it were a top SWE at a company that doesn’t have anything to do with AI… now that would be interesting. But an indie hacker using AI to exclusively write their code is completely expected.
I really, really want folks to identify the difference between how indie hackers use AI and how big corps outside of AI use AI - complete opposite ends of the spectrum.

Game: Valorant AC: Vanguard (VGK) Today’s Vanguard anti-cheat update blocked the majority of DMA firmwares using SATA/NVMe. VGK suddenly triggered an IOMMU restart warning in-game, after which the DMA firmware becomes completely unusable, even without the game running or after uninstalling Vanguard. Only fix is a full OS reinstall. It’s using IOMMU to create read blocks, which permanently breaks the majority of almost all SATA/NVMe firmwares once triggered. Even the advanced H2-board got affected. Confirmed Firmware Block wave by @ItsGamerDoc

The whole Anthropic kerfuffle would have gone much smoother if they had been upfront about it.
"Hey, we know this is unpopular, but we are moving programmatic access to API pricing. To easen the transition, we are giving API credits that match your subscription value. We also expect this change to increase capacity, so we are doubling the limits throughout Claude products for the next 2 months".
The reason they made it sound like an upgrade was because the announcement was not for developers. It was for investors and enterprise customers. Impacting devrel is just collateral damage, which is on par for a company which believes coding is going away any time now.
And this is extremely disapointing because they want to position themselves as a company that we should trust. But if they can't be honest about pricing changes, it is really hard to believe them on anything else.
