Can someone please explain in simple language why Australia shouldn't ban short term rentals like Airbnb? If we did that, it would free up literally thousands of houses and bring them back into the rental market & discourage investors owning multiple short term rental properties

@DavidBassanese Yeah but the govt said property investors are very good and keep negative gearing and capital tax discounts for NEW BUILDS its there as you are trying to help renters

My plan would allow gradual phase out of neg gearing while allowing everyone to have at least one neg geared property

@linzcom Negotiations 101, start at something outrageous and then look reasonable when you settle for what you really want. I reckon they scrap the CGT for shares and business but keep everything else.

Barr “were you prepared for the fallout on the rental front?” O’Neill “the evidence of the modelling work done in the budget said it would have no impact on rents” Barr “wow” O’Neill “Nat, if you don’t believe me, listen to the Commonwealth Bank who modelled the changes and said the impact on rent would be negligible” So, in other words, they didn’t do the modelling but instead googled the Commonwealth Banks modelling and went with that. It’s scary to think these people are actually in Government making decisions on our behalf.
