Personal news update! … I’m joining the venture platform at LGT Capital Partners. It’s been nearly 15 years since I joined @NinoMarakovic at @SapphireVC to help build @SapphirePrtnrs - and hard to believe our working relationship started another 15 years before that at Morgan Stanley waayyy back in 1994. Since that time, it’s been the privilege of a lifetime to work alongside him, and to help build what Sapphire Partners has become. I’m incredibly proud of the team, the relationships, and the managers we’ve had the chance to partner with along the way. That’s always been the most meaningful part. I’m lucky to be making this move alongside @LauraLPThompson , @natewcl , Dan Clayton, Vittorio Reynoso-Avila, and Anna Jacoby. This wasn’t an easy decision, but over time it became clear this was the right step—for our team, for Sapphire, for LGT, and for the managers we support. The opportunity came together naturally through our long relationship with @TKtwitster and the LGT team. I’ve known Thomas for over a decade and have always respected his thoughtful approach to venture. At a high level, this is about alignment and continuing to build—just at greater scale. We’re not changing what we do, just expanding where and how we do it. What made Sapphire so special to me, though, was always the people—the ones who made the work meaningful every day. While I won’t be in the same place day to day, this isn’t a goodbye—just a different way of working together. Grateful to everyone at Sapphire who made the past 15 years so meaningful 💙 I’m taking a short break before starting at LGT on April 15—spending some time with my son before he heads off to college this Fall. A big transition for both of us. 🤲 Looking forward to what’s ahead. 💫✨

@LDEakman It is interesting to think about the many, many 10-15 year-old, still privately held venture unicorns, that will experience the full valuation cycle of $ 0 day one -> $ xBn -> back to $0 still in private hands as they were held too long

Aka venture factory model - “For the last 15 years, the SaaS playbook was simple: Find a common business workflow. Build a nice UI around it. Add some integrations. Charge per seat, per month. Defend your position with switching costs and minor product tweaks.”

@BillAckman @gofundme Nothing about those videos suggested this officer was doing his best to do his job. Seemed quite eager to kill someone.

I am big believer in our legal principal that one is innocent until proven guilty. To that end, I supported the @gofundme for Jonathan Ross and intended to similarly support the gofundme for Renee Good’s family (her gofundme was closed by the time I attempted to provide support). The whole situation is a tragedy. An officer doing his best to do his job, and a protester who likely did not intend to kill the officer but whose actions in a split second led to her death. Our country is stronger if we work together to resolve the complex issues that are tearing us apart. gofundme.com/f/ice-offuver-… gofundme.com/f/support-for-…

@jenzhuscott Best case scenario is all the LLMs end up with weak moats and the rest of us win because of price competition

Academic “accommodations” have rapidly, insanely morphed from accessibility to arbitrage. The US has built a system where ordinary stress, distraction, or a B+ in college gets medicalized, and then also buys a student extra time and softer rules. This idiocy rewards self-narrated fragility, disadvantages anyone who plays it straight, and makes life harder for students with serious, real disabilities who now look like part of a hustle. The net result is a cohort of high-privilege students who are simultaneously entitled and infantilized, and then are shocked to discover the rest of the world doesn’t run on "extensions" and excuses. Bad for everyone. Just let the kid who deserves a B get a B.
Derek Thompson@DKThomp

This is a great piece with some mind-boggling statistics. - At Brown and Harvard, more than 20% of undergraduates are registered as disabled - At Amherst: more than 30 percent - At Stanford: nearly 40 percent Soon, many of these schools "may have more students receiving [disability] accommodations than not, a scenario that would have seemed absurd just a decade ago." As students and their parents have recognized the benefits of claiming disability—extended time on tests, housing accommodations, etc—the rates of disability at colleges, and especially at elite colleges, has exploded. America used to stigmatize disability too severely. Now elite institutions reward it too liberally. It simply does not make any sense to have a policy that declares half of the students at Stanford cognitively disabled and in need of accommodations.

Looking for VC/PE types running for office today, at any level, but finding virtually none except for JD Vance. Usually there are a bunch. Who am I missing?

There's a lot of pressure building @onMantel, a community platform for collectors, with @alexisohanian... the guy who created Reddit and has an insane collection of cards, toys, comics, games... But that's what makes me so bullish- we've got the cheatsheet on how to crush this.
Alexis Ohanian 🗽@alexisohanian

The latest @sevensevensix investment... let's gooo @onMantel 🔥 Mantel is an all-in-one purpose-built platform for collectors across various items, could be trading cards, stamps, coins, who knows maybe even Qai Qai dolls 😂 Here's CEO + collectible guru himself @EvanEParker

Avocados and peppers are native to mesoamerica and should be standard thanksgiving fare. Beans should be a bigger part of the meal; ot just green beans. Wheat bread should be nixed for corn bread. And we should have more meat options than turkey, like any native seafood.

I have this theory that old people and young people rate on a completely different scale. Like, boomers anchor to an average restaurant or product being 3/5 stars For Gen Z, average means 4.5/5 Is this true? I’d be curious about rating systems that correct for this somehow.
