@gambargin Spear is the best battlefield weapon IMO as far as the dude whose job is equipping the soldier thinks tbh.
Cheap, simple to repair, very easy to store in compact form, long ranged, smaller chance of accidents and have I mentioned cheap?

“Spears are the best melee weapons..” is subjective, but no one can deny their simplicity and effectiveness in battle. It’s easier to mass produce and to train, can be used on foot and while mounted (lance is more suited)
But I’m curious why ‘pila’ is referred as spear🤨

Spears are the best melee weapon ever invented, and we inherited them from earlier hominids (probably Homo erectus). With a spear, a human can take on a lion with a pretty good chance of success. The Masai tribe used to require its youth to kill a lion with a spear as a rite of manhood. Every kid. Spears in some version dominated every battlefield. Yes the Romans used gladius & shield, but they also carried spears (pila). Yes knights carried swords, but at Agincourt, the dismounted English knights used their lances as spears against the French chivalry. Even when firearms came out, spears were used. Up till near the end of the 17th century, pikes were used to protect musketeers from cavalry. The pikes were only discarded when bayonets were invented - allowing every musket to be its own spear. We still use bayonets today of course, but the vastly superior weapons of our age make it mostly superfluous. But the spear is the weapon that put us on top of the food chain, and that won almost every battle fought up till the 19th century. Lindybeige (the guy in the video) did the actual experiment. He had a bunch of guys who had never used spears before battle a bunch of guys who were somewhat familiar with swords. The spears win and win and win.

@gambargin He had this opinion confirmed after some tests with hema practitioners to which I was part. Basically a person who has never used a spear in their lives will beat a trained swordsman 9 times out of ten. Swords are mostly status symbols and backup weapons.

Actual "History buffs" tend to figure out pretty quickly that you can tell friend from foe thanks to heraldry (displayed most obviously on banners) and by keeping to your formation. If they're facing you, they're likely the enemy.

I was pleasantly surprised that they resisted the temptation of sneaking in a random representative of the Starks as they did in HOTD.
Northeners do participate in tournaments (Brandon Stark at Harrenhal) but northern knights are rare as it's a southern tradition so it would be silly if they showed up at every turn.
Starks particularly don't view tournaments positively as per Roderick and Ned, but I wonder if this is more or less of a thing before Ned's time.
