YES!!!The law is important! Enforcing the law is important! If the laws are good they should be enforced and if they are bad they should be changed! But leaving bad laws on the books and not enforcing them is not acceptable! "Laws must be general, equal, and certain" —F.A. Hayek

I wrote for the Argument today about all the ways our society is set up to reward cheating: strict rules, not really enforced, because we lack the will either to enforce them or to change them. theargumentmag.com/p/the-honesty-…

As a former progressive, this is absolutely accurate and caused me endless frustration with my co-partisans. They fundamentally don’t care if their ideas work. They hardly even have a concept of ideas working. Their entire evaluation function is based on social perception and emotionalism which is, in fact, profoundly selfish and unvirtuous. If you care more about feeling like/being seen as good than you do about results, you’re a selfish parasite. Hardly exclusive to the left, but it defines the leftist project in a way it doesn’t define any other political faction.

@edwest After a decade in the public sector I still find this one of the most replicable observations ever made.

Read his replies and then realize that the average NYC officer is somehow less intelligent than this retired sergeant.

@BetterBlocksNJ @NickZurawski 1,000-unit bldg w/ 15% affordable = 850 expensive. Calling it a solution misleads. To be clear: the city may be progressive, YIMBY ideology isn’t, it prioritizes market expansion over affordability. Upzoning increases land value & pushes prices UP on the 850 units, not down.

Nobody does a better job putting numbers in context than Nick Zurawski. Shaving 12 stories off a high rise as a “compromise” to appease rich condo owners next door means millions less in tax revenue for the city and 100 fewer people get off the affordable housing waiting list.

there should probably at minimum be an investigation into NYPD corruption based on this admission alone

Emily let me clue you into something that has been a standing order for decades - No Doctors, Nurses, teachers and other city agencies. Since I was the Chief of Dept -I altered this to add , Any friend of @sidrosenberg19 was a friend of ours - free pass for Sid’s friends. I did this because I could. That’s just the way it is my precious snowflake.

In a world that follows law and order, blatantly admitting to this type of corruption would result in the city yanking this guys pension out from under him at the very least.

I once dated a guy whose parents were in this category, and the most interesting thing was that it seemed to be a general issue with information uptake/comprehension. I once watched the news with them and after the segment ended one of them proceeded to recount the main story with a majority of the facts wrong. it was something like "a van drove through a crowd on Monday injuring 2 and the driver was arrested" and he was saying things like "a van drove through a crowd last night and killed a guy and they don't know who did it." it was pretty surreal.

If you have the basic skills to participate in the discourse at all — like you can read and comprehend a New York Times article in order to complain about it — you’re in a weird, out of touch, elite bubble. slowboring.com/p/in-defense-o…

in case you're wondering why the jones act is still around, it's because of labor union solidarity a law that hurts almost everyone protects a miniscule number of mariners and shipyard workers but organized labor as a whole circles the wagons around even its worst parts
AFL-CIO ✊@AFLCIO

A 60-day waiver of the Jones Act is unnecessary and ineffective. It’s a giveaway to foreign shipping interests, dressed up as relief at the pump. It’s deeply concerning that the Trump admin would open U.S. waterways to nonunion foreign competitors. aflcio.org/press/releases…

@peterpeirce @esoltas @NYCMayor Affordable & mixed-income, which is all upzoning starting after MIH in 2016 (All remaining 100% market rate development in NYC is by-right zoned capacity that existed before 2016, so there's no streamlining for it bc it's already by right)

Thanks to the new @esoltas & Gruber paper, we now have a calibrated econ model built on LA data that can be localized to NYC conditions @NYCMayor's plans to cut 2.5 years off permitting timelines in NYC would be equivalent to a ~20% percent drop in construction costs 🤯

Practically everything he found was price-gouging from contractors or outsourcing. The mindbending part of DOGE was that it was going to increase public spending by cutting public staff. Building state capacity saves money.

Government must deliver for working people—and every dollar in our budget should work as hard as they do. That’s why I directed every agency to cut waste and help close our budget gap. Here’s some of what we found.

Letting more people suffer by banning self driving is a policy choice Making life unaffordable by limiting housing is a policy choice The same people who make these choices grandstand and rail against the billionaires and keep raising taxes

tokyo adds 100,000 housing units a year in a city of 14 million and rents are flat. we add 50,000 units a year in a country of 330 million and rents are up 30%. the japanese did not discover a secret. they just permit things. it's not a mystery. it's a choice
