It could open the door to mass lawsuits, force algorithm design changes (not just content moderation) and weaken traditional Big Tech legal protections. The jury awarded about $3 million in damages to the plaintiff, finding these companies liable for addictive designs, harming a minor. This trial is groundbreaking because it tries to sidestep Section 230 protections. Instead of blaming user content, it targets algorithms and design choices. A separate jury in New Mexico DID find Meta liable and imposed $375M in penalties for child safety violations .
