The most striking quality of Phil - remembered by many TV colleagues - was his great friendliness & good humour. He always stopped you for a good natter, asking what was the gossip, what were people saying, what would happen next? He'll be sorely missed by his many friends.

If it wasn't for the tragedy of the 2010 election court case, when his constituency election was overturned, Phil would have risen to big roles in Labour's opposition years - though he was no fan of Corbyn. Phil might have been a very senior & effective minister under Starmer.
