On March 7, 2024, Master Sgt. Christopher “Chris” Decker — a U.S. Army Ranger and Georgia Southern ROTC instructor — was killed in Effingham County when his motorcycle was struck by a vehicle on Hwy 21.
After months of investigation, 21-year-old Jadon Demani Mike was arrested in November 2024 and charged with First-Degree Homicide by Vehicle, DUI, and Failure to Yield.
While out on bond, he was arrested again in September 2025 for another DUI.
On February 24, 2026, he entered a plea deal. The felony homicide charge was reduced to Second-Degree Homicide by Vehicle (a misdemeanor). The DUI charge tied to Decker’s death was dismissed. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail, probation, community service, and a fine.
A decorated Ranger/Father/Husband lost his life. The driver received 30 days.
