Ashes as a sign of repentance are explicitly biblical. Daniel 9:3 fasting “with sackcloth and ashes”, Jonah 3:6 the king “sat in ashes”, Job 42:6 “repent in dust and ashes”, Esther 4:1 "sackcloth and ashes". And Jesus references this repentance pattern in Matthew 11:21 and Luke 10:13 “they would have repented… in sackcloth and ashes”. So no, it’s not “fabricated”, Ash Wednesday applies a biblical sign of repentance liturgically. The exact placement isn’t the point, the sign is.

And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Matthew 6:17-18 It’s almost like the Bible explicitly tells us to do the opposite of what Roman Catholics are doing right now with Lent.

@repentantKerry If you keep studying the Bible for yourself, you may have the same experience again in 10 years when you realize that simplistic, one-sided, 500 year old theology based on flawed systematics that prevent you from taking ALL of your Bible at face value isn't cutting it anymore.

Reformed churches and Protestant pastors usually pick a couple verses to dissect in their own context every service.

There is everything in these files, congressional statements, DOJ records, FBI briefings, text messages, news articles.
