I’m proud to be Somali, alhamdulillah. One thing I’ve noticed about the world is this: people only spend time talking about, criticizing, mocking, or attacking those who carry weight and meaning. Nobody wastes energy on people they believe are irrelevant. Behind all the noise, the insults, and the stereotypes, there is usually something deeper strength, history, resilience, and value that cannot be ignored. A lot of times, when people try to tear others down or create false narratives, it comes from discomfort with seeing strong people stand tall despite everything. Strong nations and strong communities are always watched, judged, and talked about more than others. No matter what is said, I know who I am and where I come from. That will never change. I am proud to be Somali. Alhamdulillah.

🚨🇸🇴🇺🇸 BREAKING EXCLUSIVE: U.S. GETTING FLEECED; MINNESOTA FRAUD LINKED TO SOMALIAN PRESIDENT’S DICTATORIAL AMBITIONS Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is connected to the fraud taking place in Minnesota and other states, and is using those funds to consolidate power in Mogadishu, per confidential sources, right as we write… And if that wasn't bad enough, that money is also impacting American interests in the Iranian conflict and around the Red Sea, where Somali pirates have been a resurgent force in recent weeks. Here's the breakdown: Somali nationals operating daycare centers, healthcare programs, and even initiatives meant to feed hungry children have been caught stealing hundreds of millions from U.S. taxpayers. Congresswoman Ilhan Omar just blew off a Minnesota committee deadline tied to the Feeding Our Future probe. She also sponsored the 2020 MEALS Act that critics say opened the door to this type of fraud in the first place. This part of the story is widely known by now, thanks to people like @nickshirleyy. But what is not widely known is where most of the stolen money actually goes. According to these sources, hundreds of millions have flowed from the U.S. Somali diaspora directly into Mogadishu through Dahabshiil, a money remittance company with notoriously thin KYC standards for American Somalis. Dahabshiil has operated under the protective umbrella of Mohamud's political network since 2013, with the President personally fending off sanctions and regulatory scrutiny on its behalf. For many in the diaspora, sending money back home is safer than spending it in the U.S., because much of it involves outright tax evasion. And the destination of those funds tells the story. Mogadishu's real estate market is in a hyper-boom phase that defies both global and African norms. Nearly 10,000 buildings and towers have gone up in the last 6 years, with luxury mixed-use developments receiving special urban planning treatment in exchange for greasing the palms of the political elite surrounding Mohamud. These nouveau riche from Minnesota and Ohio buy in, then layer on prestige by funding local NGOs and even militant groups, all of which ultimately funnel back to Mohamud and his inner circle. Now look at what is happening politically: -In March, Somalia's parliament voted to change the constitution and extend Mohamud's term by a year, delaying elections that were due this year. -Opposition leaders called it "a clear indication of a worrying trend toward authoritarianism." -Regional states including Puntland and South West State have severed ties with the federal government. -A court in Kismayo issued a warrant for Mohamud's arrest on charges of treason. This is not a functioning democracy, it is a president acting without accountability. Then there is the question of who Hassan Sheikh Mohamud actually is and where his political loyalties lie: -In 2011, he founded the Peace and Development Party, which had direct ties to Al-Islah, Somalia's branch of the Muslim Brotherhood. -He resigned from the PDP in 2016 and launched a new vehicle, the Union for Peace and Development Party, but the ideological footprint never really left. -He has appointed multiple Al-Islah affiliated figures to senior positions in his administration including the ministries of interior, justice, and social affairs. And while Mohamud consolidates power domestically and delays accountability through constitutional manipulation, he turns a blind eye to factions conducting or facilitating attacks on Red Sea shipping, attacks that are costing the global economy billions. America has poured billions into Somalia in aid, peacekeeping support, and counterterrorism assistance. That kind of leverage exists for a reason, and right now it should be used. A leader who is siphoning money from American taxpayers, with Muslim Brotherhood affiliations, documented corruption, and enables threats to global shipping does not get to rewrite the constitution to extend his own term. The line should be drawn clearly. American lawmakers cannot afford to keep treating Somalia like a problem they will deal with later. Every month Mohamud delays is another month of consolidation, another month of diaspora money flowing into Mogadishu, and another month of regional fracture. Sanctions now! The Somali people deserve better, and American taxpayers deserve answers!! @nickshirleyy @StateDept @WhiteHouse @SecRubio @SpeakerJohnson @JDVance @tedcruz

Fahad Yasin once led NISA—tasked with protecting the nation. Yet under his watch, generals and businessmen were assassinated, and officers later defected to Al-Shabaab. Now he returns to Mogadishu. This isn’t politics. It’s accountability. Somalia deserves answers.

There are moments in a nation’s life when change does not announce itself with spectacle, but instead unfolds with a quiet, deliberate persistence. Somalia today appears to be entering such a moment. For much of the past three decades, the country has been defined not by coherence, but by fragmentation—its political authority diffused, its national identity diluted, and its institutional capacity severely attenuated. Sovereignty, in many respects, became a negotiated concept, mediated through clan structures and regional power centers rather than anchored in a unified state. It is within this historical context that the leadership of Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre must be situated. Their tenure does not emerge in a vacuum; it is an attempt—incremental yet intentional to recalibrate a nation long suspended between collapse and recovery. What they inherited was not merely fragility, but systemic disarticulation. Political authority was not absent so much as it was dispersed. Governance existed, but often in localized, competing forms. The idea of Somalia as a cohesive national project had, for many, receded into abstraction. Over the past four years, however, there have been discernible indications of reorientation. The federal government has pursued a measured reassertion of strategic direction, particularly in sectors with long-term economic salience. Offshore hydrocarbon exploration, once largely speculative, is now transitioning toward operational reality, positioning Somalia, cautiously, within the architecture of global energy markets. Concurrently, renewed emphasis on the maritime economy, especially fisheries, reflects an effort to reclaim resources that have historically been underexploited or externally appropriated. In the realm of security, the shift has been more subtle but no less consequential. There is evidence of a gradual pivot from reactive containment toward more coordinated, forward-leaning operations. While the challenges remain formidable, the posture itself suggests an evolving doctrine—one that seeks not merely to endure instability, but to incrementally compress it. Yet perhaps the most consequential transformation is perceptual. For years, Somalia has occupied a fixed position in the global consciousness—a symbol of protracted crisis. That narrative has proven resilient, not only internationally but also within segments of its own diaspora. For some, skepticism toward progress is rooted in lived experience, a rational response to repeated cycles of hope and disappointment. For others—a far smaller, though disproportionately vocal subset—there exist more entrenched incentives, where instability has, over time, become economically or politically instrumental. Domestically, resistance manifests through a different dynamic. Somalia’s political ecosystem has long accommodated actors whose influence is inextricably tied to public office itself, rather than to enduring institutional or economic foundations. In periods of transition, such actors often exhibit a degree of inertia—or even obstruction—particularly when reform threatens to recalibrate established hierarchies of access and influence. These tensions are neither anomalous nor uniquely Somali. They are characteristic of states navigating the precarious passage from fragility toward functionality. Progress, in such environments, is seldom linear; it is iterative, contested, and at times reversible. And yet, amid these complexities, there are signals—subtle but significant—of a changing relationship between Somalia and its people. One such signal lies in the behavior of the diaspora. Increasingly, families are making the consequential decision to re-anchor aspects of their lives in Somalia. Thousands of children born in North America and Europe are now spending formative years within the country. This is not merely a demographic footnote; it is an inflection point in perception. Such decisions imply a recalibration of risk, an emerging belief that Somalia, while imperfect, is no longer defined solely by precarity, but also by possibility. This does not suggest inevitability. Somalia’s structural constraints remain substantial: security vulnerabilities, institutional fragility, and political fragmentation persist. Nor does it imply that current leadership is beyond reproach. Scrutiny remains indispensable, and critical engagement is essential to any durable progress. However, it does invite a more nuanced inquiry: How should incremental transformation be evaluated in a context where historical baselines have been so profoundly constrained? In Somalia’s case, the answer may lie not in absolutist judgments, but in a longitudinal perspective. The past four years do not constitute a definitive transformation. They do, however, delineate the early contours of one. History, in its deliberative impartiality, will render the final assessment. It will weigh not rhetoric, but outcomes; not intentions, but trajectories. For now, one conclusion appears increasingly difficult to dismiss: Somalia is undergoing a process of quiet reconstitution. And in a nation where stasis once seemed endemic, even measured movement carries profound significance.

The United States maintains its military presence in Somalia based on strategic security interests—not clan allegiance, not diaspora sentiment, and certainly not local political fragmentation. Meanwhile, the secessionist push in Somaliland is rooted in a specific regional and clan-based political project. These are separate realities, moving on different tracks, driven by different motives

Turns out Israel’s recognition of Somaliland was not just the right thing to do. It was the smart thing to do.

FORMAL LEGAL NOTICE, CONSTITUTIONAL OBJECTION, AND INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DEMAND To: Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, President To: Hamza Abdi Barre, Prime Minister To: Minister of Internal Security To: Director General, National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) To: Minister of Information To: Deputy Minister of Information Subject: Unlawful Arrest and Arbitrary Detention of Ms. Sacdiya Macallin Cali in Violation of Constitutional and International Law This notice concerns the unlawful arrest and ongoing arbitrary detention of Ms. Sacdiya Macallin Cali, a Somali citizen engaged in peaceful civic expression and lawful public criticism regarding governance and socio-economic conditions. The detention constitutes a direct violation of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Somalia, particularly Article 16 on freedom of expression, Article 20 on freedom of assembly and association, Article 25 on personal liberty and security, and Article 36 on human dignity. These provisions are binding constitutional obligations on all state institutions. Any deprivation of liberty without lawful judicial authorization, due process, or legitimate justification is unconstitutional and amounts to arbitrary detention under Somali constitutional law. It also breaches Somalia’s international obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, including Article 9 prohibiting arbitrary arrest and Article 19 protecting freedom of expression, as well as the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, which guarantees liberty, security of person, and the right to express opinions. The absence of transparent legal grounds or judicial oversight renders the detention incompatible with these binding instruments and engages state responsibility under international law. Such actions further constitute potential abuse of office and unlawful deprivation of liberty under Somali legal principles. No authority is permitted to use state security institutions as instruments of political suppression or to override constitutional guarantees. Actions taken without lawful mandate may give rise to both domestic criminal accountability and international human rights proceedings. This pattern of arresting young citizens for peaceful expression raises serious concerns of systemic abuse of power, undermines constitutional governance, and violates the principles of necessity, proportionality, and rule of law. It also exposes Somalia to international scrutiny under human rights review mechanisms and related accountability frameworks. Accordingly, the Federal Government of Somalia is formally notified that the detention of Ms. Sacdiya Macallin Cali is unlawful, unconstitutional, and internationally wrongful. Immediate unconditional release is required, along with restoration of her rights and formal acknowledgment that her arrest lacked legal basis. Continued detention will be treated as a continuing violation engaging full legal responsibility of the competent authorities. This notice is issued in defense of constitutional supremacy, rule of law, and fundamental human rights, which cannot be suspended or overridden by executive discretion. @amnesty @hrw @UKinSomalia  @HouseForeignGOP @realDonaldTrump @StateDept @SpeakerJohnson @susiewiles2024 @HassanSMohamud @TheVillaSomalia @HamzaAbdiBarre @AadanMadobe @SomaliainQatar @MOFAKuwait @UAEinSomalia @ChineseSomalia @KSAmofaEN @US2SOMALIA @EU_in_Somalia @ItalyinSomalia @UNSomalia @TC_MogadisuBE @UNDPSomalia @WorldBankAfrica @IMFAfrica @CanHCKenya @SwissEmbassyKE

Friends: a Couple of days ago I participated in an X (Twitter) discussion on the low Royalty allocated to #Somalia in its oil and gas exploration agreement with #Turkiye. I was supportive of the agreement, recognizing both its limitations and its strategic importance for Somalia’s long-term development. My reasoning was as follows. Yes, there are a lot of weaknesses in the agreement, including high cost recovery (90%) and low royalty (5%). But at this early stage, Somalia remains a frontier jurisdiction with no proven commercial reserves. In such contexts, attracting credible international partners is inherently challenging. Offshore exploration is capital-intensive and high-risk, often requiring significant upfront investment with no guarantee of discovery. Against this backdrop, the agreement reflects a pragmatic approach: prioritizing exploration activity and geological discovery over immediate fiscal gains. While the fiscal terms, particularly the royalty rate and cost recovery provisions, may appear less favorable compared to more mature petroleum regimes, they must be evaluated considering Somalia’s current position. Without proven reserves, not to mention the security and political risk, the country’s bargaining power is necessarily constrained. Securing investment under these conditions is itself a meaningful achievement, as it initiates the critical first step in transforming potential resources into confirmed national assets. Importantly, this agreement should be viewed not as an endpoint, but as a learning platform. It offers Somalia a valuable opportunity to build institutional capacity, strengthen regulatory oversight, and develop technical expertise in petroleum governance. As exploration progresses and geological certainty improves, Somalia will be better positioned to negotiate future agreements on more favorable terms. In this sense, the agreement represents a foundation, one that may enable Somalia to transition, over time, from a high-risk frontier environment to a more competitive and strategically empowered resource holder. Furthermore, given what is happening in the Middle East and Iran, this venture may have arrived at the most opportune time for implementation.
