#PT582 #SK Specific materials used in SOME tattoo inks may become magnetized, but it seems there needs to be more research if tattoos will be a contraindication to E-stim. However I have placed pads over tattoos as a tech with no adverse reactions! ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…

#PT582 #ARF This article talks about how passive modalities should be used to facilitate participation in an active treatment program- as active tx keeps the pt functional in the long term. Pain education should also be included. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…

@rainataylorrr PTs shouldn't be afraid to ask questions about lifestyle choice, and encouraging change - it is a sensitive topic and has to be done skillfully! I think it's in our scope. Community events such as walking groups, and reframing Pt's relationship to "exercise" is crucial.#RT #PT582

@EmilySelby_SPT #PT582 #RT I think these classes will be very beneficial! I definitely struggle trying to motivate others and I am excited to learn better techniques. Motivation is going to be vital to make sure our patients adhere to our plans!

@rainataylorrr ... in undergrad that focused on health behaviors and how motivational interviewing can help create health change and I thought it was insanely beneficial. Con. ed. courses like that would be really useful to our profession in understanding how to engage patients in their health

@rainataylorrr I would say start simple, challenge them to start exercising in 10 min blocks and seeing how that makes them feel. Hopefully they feel better and become more motivated!

#PT582 #RT As entry level physical therapists we can educate our patients not only on the benefits of physical activity, but how much is optimal, and also give them some ideas of how they can meet the guidelines. Some people never start because they don’t know what to do.

@Riley_shae98 #PT582 #RT I agree! Some patients will definitely become dependent on their visits to heal them, but need to be informed of the work they are going to have to put in outside. It's our jobs to make a plan they will stick to!

#PT582 #RT To encourage activity outside the clinic, a PT needs utilize their creativity when establishing a treatment plan. Spending too much time using icepacks& STIM is a temporary fix, thus it is essential that we focus on how the body can heal itself through exercise.

#RT #PT582 The health promotion strategy we use depends on the pt. Some are goal oriented and we can teach them to set SMART goals to reach the activity guidelines. Others may respond to knowing they are at risk for a disease and be motivated to lower their risk through activity

@_Erin_Peterson @Kiernan20732093 #PT582 #RT Exactly! I think it would also be very beneficial to ask them if there is a hobby they've always wanted to do but were not able to so that they are excited and working towards something they thought they'd never do!

I think PTs can educate pts about health promotion including PA and general nutrition. I helped on a PA curriculum, and while it was focused on inc PA it also incorporated nutrition aspects. I think these are both important for living an overall healthy lifestyle #PT582 #RT

@LukasBarker #PT582 #RT I think tailoring our plans to the patient is going to be vital to their adherence with their exercise program. Asking their hobbies, or even things that they have always wanted to do but haven't is a great start!

#PT582 #RT I think education is key in this case. Having very simplistic visuals can help show our patients the benefits of exercise. I would like to try to motivate my pts by asking them to just start small. Maybe only like 10 min a day and then eventually over time increase it.

@EmilioA43040616 #PT582 #RT Leading by example is huge! We definitely need to evaluate ourselves and make sure we are practicing the advice we are giving. Each pt is different and we may need to check in with them frequently as a source of motivation.

#PT582 #RT An important component in my practice is the "practice what you preach" ideal. I want my patients to understand the importance of daily PA and believe leading by example helps establish trust/credibility. Secondly, meet patients where they are.

#PT582 #RT A technique I will implement most for this would be education and positivity. Providing our pts with the knowledge to best help themselves is our whole job, motivation is no exception. We can provide pts with resources to show evidence of the benefits besides our word

@rainataylorrr The curriculum I was working on was for grades K-5 and there were specific standards we were required to implement. But I think in general, using resources like the Harvard my plate are a great place to start for general education. #PT582 #RT
