Its taken me some time to write this. Last week, around the same time of the day, the world - for me - tilted on its axis. My mother-in-law, Mrs. Uma Venkatram - Amma - left us. I am yet to fully process my grief, but feel compelled to share it here. I entered her household when I was 23 and she was 58. (Now, I am 58 and she is/was 93 - still can't bring myself to say she 'was'). I was a young professional, new at the workplace, eager to prove myself and build my own identity, while she was the embodiment of a generation that anchored itself in the sanctity of the home. For a time, we were two women finding it very difficult to navigate the fault lines of a changing India. She urged me toward domesticity, while I was relentless in my pursuit of my own version of success. That initial, unspoken friction, that push-and-pull between tradition and transformation continued till Avtar was born. And then, something changed in a very profound way in her. My idea of a business, a social enterprise, finding jobs for women - jobs which gave them flexibility, gave them independence and security - financial and otherwise, that touched a chord in her. She did not just adapt to my dream, she became its bedrock. She understood what it meant. She empathized with the countless Indian women who would benefit. When I dared to imagine Avtar, it was her hand that wrote the first cheque for ₹60,000. It was the seed capital of a business, but more importantly, it was the validation of a daughter-in-law by a woman who had once hoped for a different path for me. They always said she was fortunate. They said money touched by her multiplied. They said a purse blessed by her would never be empty. But as I look back, I realize it was us who were the fortunate ones. While my husband and I chased our careers, she was the one at every karate practice, every music class, and every Bharatnatyam recital. She turned a fussy eater’s meal into a tricolor "flag pulao" and moved from being my teacher in the kitchen to being my fiercest advocate in the world, telling her relatives, "Saundarya is my daughter, there's no 'in-law' there." The depth of her support, however, was something I only truly grasped after she passed. While sorting through her belongings, I found it, a carefully curated archive tucked away in Cadbury's chocolate box. Clippings of every newspaper article, every interview, and every press mention of my work over the last three decades. She had been quietly collecting the milestones of my professional life with a pride she rarely voiced aloud. Our final chapter was as grace-filled as her life. Last Friday, April 24th, after a 45-day battle following a fall, as she lay in her final moments, my husband held her hand, and I stood by her side as she breathed her last. She chose to include us in her farewell, a parting gift of intimacy that I will cherish forever. Amma, love you. Om Shanthi. Om Shanthi. Om Shanthi.

Tamil Nadu lost a familiar and trusted name today. V. R. Muthu, the man behind Idhayam Oil, passed away this afternoon. More than a businessman, he was a presence in countless kitchens and homes, earning generations of trust. May his soul rest in peace.

Most first generation private university founders, ran them for profit, save a few honourable exceptions. Only in the past decade or so are we seeing private universities dedicated to cause of real education - crowd funded with anchor founders or philanthropists - come up.

I am deeply grateful to Peak XV / Sequoia India for taking a chance on me, a starry-eyed 25-year-old, in 2012. It has been an extraordinary journey, marked by lifelong friendships, learning the craft of venture capital, and the privilege of working alongside world-class founders building enduring companies. Time has brought perspective and humility, even as the courage to dream has only grown stronger. I am stepping away from @peakxvpartners to pursue the biggest dream of my life: Building a new venture capital firm with my partners, and friends of nearly 15 years, Ashish @dvbydt and Ishaan @Ishaanmittal2. When I began in venture capital, India’s digital economy was still fledgling. It hasn’t always been rainbows and unicorns, there were many overcast moments. Through it all, I had the unwavering support and the wise counsel of my partners @sjs_day1 @gvravishankar @mobhat @i_sakshichopra @RajanAnandan @rohitagar_wal. I am deeply indebted to them. It has been an honour to work with everyone at the firm. I feel fortunate to have learned from Sequoia’s investment philosophy, cultural values, and long-term orientation. Thank you Mike and Doug for the constant inspiration. Being early partners to founders at @AtlanHQ @chargebee @FloBizOfficial @HevoData @Hightouch @MedGenomeLabs @moglix @saas_labs @getscapi @whatfix has been the greatest privilege. As several of these companies approach or surpass $100M in revenues and chart their path toward an IPO, the dreamer in me is convinced the time is right to double down on entrepreneurship in India. Coming back to my next chapter. Ashish and I have known each other for over 13 years. Ishaan and I first met nearly two decades ago as college tennis partners, and all of us have worked together for more than a decade. Building something together is special! We aspire to build an enduring venture capital firm that helps catalyse the next generation of entrepreneurship in India.🙏🙏🙏

How Moneycontrol got the byte from President Trump at Davos A little behind the scenes piece on what was a high point at Davos And I know this feels like undue excitement for a 20 second sound bite. But the odds of a reporter from India getting a question across to Trump in Davos was zero. There was a crush of global press who were in line. Hence the adrenaline 🙏🏽 moneycontrol.com/news/business/…

Heartbroken to share the news of the passing of our dear friend Varun, husband of Sangeetha Kandavel. Though we knew him for just over a year, his warmth, laughter, and kindness made him family. Gone far too soon. 💔 May his soul rest in peace. 🙏 @sang1983 @srinisankar @aprsiva

@devinamehra The sectors moorings were anchored around being a low cost reliable source of service providing large scale employment; and it largely stayed there. Save adding adjacencies such as consulting & process outsourcing and gaining vertical focus to improve margins or retain clients.

IT Services and Employment: Part ONE You have seen the headlines: hiring plummeting in IT and now even some layoffs. but does this mean that the sector is in terminal decline? Or are we conflating two completely different things: the role of the sector as a direct and indirect employment generator for the Indian economy and its business outlook? After all this is a sector whose orbituaries have been written multiple times in the past as well and it has always come back bigger and stronger, managing multiple pivots. They have already geared up for the IT world. However there IS an area where Indian IT has been almost completely lacking: billions of dollars in cash flows and for the shareholders but absolutely ZERO focus on any research and development or moving up the value chain. Unlike Chinese companies that transformed before our very eyes, the Indian IT sector has been the same old same old. The opportunity loss has bothered me for decades. My July 2025 column for Mint on all that is right and wrong for the Indian IT services sector. @livemint @WritesRavi The Indian IT services model has finally begun to falter… or has it-Mint-July-31-2025 Want investment advice that cuts through the clutter and the surface level analysis? @shyamsek Littlewoods in Commercial Street had some brilliant collection. A T Shirt that I bought from the store served me for a decade without a tinge it fade or a thread / button coming off.

In the mid 90s, Simone Tata bought Littlewoods. I still recall visiting the first store on Bengaluru's commercial street. That Buy grew into Westside, which is a core part of today's Trent. I really liked the way Tatas built this company. It traded very cheap in those early days when nobody believed in the idea. But over 25 years, they patiently built it into what it is now.

I have been absolutely crystal clear on this for decades: if there has to be a monopoly/ near monopoly in any business, I would anyday prefer a Govt. Company be this instead of the Pvt. Sector

@sandipsabharwal @DGCAIndia While may be tactically ok to defuse the crisis. It should be backed by strong punitive action against the airline for not having planned to build crew capacity when the regulatory requirement was clear. Also the regulator should be answerable for not having monitored it closely.

It is the right move taken by the @DGCAIndia to give a one time relaxation to #Indigo till the 10th of February Finally passengers were suffering hugely and the peak holiday and new year travel season is just around the corner First defuse the crisis, then look for long term solutions is the best strategy
