@fasc1nate @grok is this really Central Park? Wasn't it created in the 1800s?

Mathematics. Late-night musings, before sleep. The first five people who correctly solve this will be ecstatically happy for the rest of today.

@kasarmert @bitbrain Man the game Industry is such a weird place. I'm thinking this noise will all blow over in a few months? Godot may be led by a few individuals, but the project contributors are the owners and from a wide audience spanning many beliefs and values.

Funny how the people who claim they hate politics in game engines are the ones most obsessed with Godot's politics. Shouldn't they be the ones focused on the tech? The irony is doing cartwheels.

@pigdev It would be great if all devs of all political backgrounds and beliefs can just collaborate together without stirring up all the fights. I recall a time not long ago when folks just respectfully agreed to disagree and that was that.

Just to be clear, I do have a code of conduct in my server and I am in the right to ban you if you violate it. But I don't remember having to ban anyone in the last 2 years or such. Neither have reports from other members. So I'd say it's a safe space.

Months ago members from the #GodotEngine community reached out to me looking for a "safe place" to relate with other members of the community. They complained that they were getting banned from ridiculous things like saying "guys"(which is supposedly not gender neutral).

@Akien Remember the Godot icon memes going viral? Hopefully more of this type of thing and less noise for everyone. Projects are super difficult to manage especially with many varied opinions and values. Stay safe all.

@reduzio Makes sense I think, less complexity and noise the easier it is to spot problems. Or what would you think is the reason?

This terrain editor for @godotengine is already great and it keeps getting better! You can tell it's developed by and for game developers with a lot of attention to detail. And it's free and open source software! Be sure to follow Cory github.com/TokisanGames/T…
Cory Petkovsek 🎮@TokisanGames

Finding the mouse position on the terrain using the GPU, without collision. This clever method greatly improves the previous method used in Terrain3D. It's considerably faster, works much closer and farther away, and is more accurate. See 🧵 #madewithgodot #GodotEngine

@ABoringLadder @crunch_rock @reduzio We had this one guy, few years back, dedicate his time for several weeks to creating throwaway GitHub accounts and spam the main repo. It was off the rails. I don't understand it, but mental illness is also a thing.

@crunch_rock @reduzio There are definitely haters… it’s really weird too the specific haters I see almost feel like a cult. In fact there is one account just dedicated to hating Godot… very bizarre

@reduzio Running in the CI? Sounds like a good idea at least for a suite that doesn't take too long. Maybe run the full (> hour) suites on releases?

@clairem_sl @Xrayez @pak_jungsu @abhinav_Demkeys @reduzio I don't understand, it doesn't appear Juan stated Jolt was maintained by the Godot foundation? Godot is just a tool. If you aren't into it, for any reason, I don't see the need to continue to use it, begrudgingly?

@c_pruett @coderman64 Gdscript also doesn't have any garbage collection, there are however some (not all )reference counted objects.

@coderman64 Heck, let's just write everything in assembly. Why pay for the overhead of a compiler? What could possibly be more important than raw, unmitigated execution speed?

This conversation is insane. The role of an engine like Godot--made with no particular game genre in mind--is to expose flexible creator tools and adapt to developer needs over time. Flexibility and adaptability is 1000% more important than raw perf. "You should spend time optimizing code the profiler has never complained about" is an engineering astronaut take.

An illuminating exchange about the approach to performance in Godot (slightly paraphrased) between Sam Pruden (who wrote the post "Godot is not the new Unity - The anatomy of a Godot API call" and Godot creator and Technical Lead Juan Linietsky. Source: gist.github.com/reduz/cb05fe96

@reduzio @lawnjelly There really isn't anything else comparable in open source game engines, to Godot. Most things I've seen are much more feature limited, niche etc. I admit I may have some ignorance in this aspect as there have been many up and coming engines lately.

@reduzio Yes, I truly am perplexed by game industry trends. No one would put up with all the proprietary nonsense in typical tech... with exception of government contracts.
