When Merkel was Chancellor, she herself did not want to use the EU's diplomatic clout to help put an end to Russia's already ongoing war against Ukraine. She preferred to operate on a national basis (the French role was largely decorative) and she refuses to recognise her failure

Ten years ago, during the first Trump administration, I wrote a recommendation for the Polish authorities: if Trump ever began seriously considering a withdrawal of U.S. forces from Europe, Poland’s strategy should be to ensure that NATO’s eastern flank and Poland would be the last place in Europe from which Americans leave. That recommendation had a political dimension too. As a proven ally of the United States, Poland had an important systemic role to play in Europe. A clearly pro-American Poland created space for France’s more skeptical posture toward the U.S. and for Germany’s constructive, centrist balancing role. Today, Poland has no strategy toward Trump at all, the UK is not playing its traditional role either what complicates Europe navigating during Trump’s second term. Representatives of the Polish government, already feeling the pressure of next year’s general elections, are beginning to behave populistically - joining the anti-Trump mood of liberal elites who bear zero responsibility for anything, and who, if Poland’s relations with a Trump administration deteriorate, will happily blame President Nawrocki and the opposition PiS for not “fixing” things. Cheap and easy game. Even if totally irresponsible. This weakens transatlantic relations and makes a rational policy toward a transactional, renegotiating Trump far harder to conduct. So it is not only Trump who is damaging the transatlantic relationship. The Polish government is playing its own part too - without even realizing it, because driven by domestic politics it seems to lack the headspace for any serious reflection. Transatlantic relations urgently need adults back in the room, on both sides of the Pond.

Iran kann den Krieg nicht gewinnen Die europäischen Nato-Verbündeten lehnen es ab, sich an den militärischen Schlägen der USA und Israels gegen den Iran zu beteiligen. Den USA so sichtbar einen Korb zu geben, ist eine politische Torheit. Denn wenn wir einmal den Schutz der Amerikaner brauchen, werden wir mit Sicherheit eine ähnliche Reaktion bekommen. In Bezug auf die militärische Entwicklung sehe ich klare Fortschritte der USA und ihrer Verbündeten. Die Zahl der Raketen, die Israel getroffen haben, ist dramatisch zurückgegangen. Die Zahl der Raketen in die arabischen Golfstaaten hat zwar zugenommen, aber bislang haben die Golfstaaten selbst kaum reagiert. Es ist unklug von den Iranern, noch mehr Nachbarstaaten anzugreifen. Je mehr Akteure man in den Krieg hineinzieht, desto schwieriger wird die eigene Lage. Es dauert etwas, aber der Iran kann diesen Krieg militärisch nicht gewinnen. Trump unterschätzte die Folgen des Krieges gegen den Iran und will die Kosten des militärischen Handelns in der Straße von Hormus jetzt sozialisieren. Unser Reflex ist: "Nein", doch wir haben Interesse an freiem Ölhandel und an einem guten Verhältnis zu den USA.

IF THE UKRAINIAN PRESIDENT DOES NOT RESUME OIL SUPPLIES TO SLOVAKIA ON MONDAY, ON THAT SAME DAY I WILL ASK THE RELEVANT SLOVAK COMPANIES TO STOP EMERGENCY ELECTRICITY SUPPLIES TO UKRAINE. Since the beginning of the war, Slovakia has been helping Ukraine. Around 180,000 Ukrainians are currently on our territory, we provide humanitarian assistance, and we organize joint government meetings. We are doing substantially more for Ukraine than some other countries. The Ukrainian president refuses to understand our peace-oriented approach and, because we do not support the war, he is behaving maliciously toward Slovakia. First, he halted gas flows to Slovakia, causing us damages of €500 million per year. Now he has stopped oil flows, causing us further losses and logistical difficulties. If the West does not mind that the Nord Stream gas pipeline was blown up, Slovakia cannot accept Slovak-Ukrainian relations as a one-way ticket benefiting only Ukraine. Slovakia is a proud and sovereign country, and I am a proud and sovereign Slovak. If oil supplies to Slovakia are not resumed on Monday, I will ask SEPS, the state-owned joint-stock company, to stop emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine. In January 2026 alone, these emergency supplies, needed to stabilize the Ukrainian energy grid, were required twice as much as during the entire year of 2025. Given President Zelensky’s unacceptable behavior toward Slovakia, treating it as a hostile country, I consider it absolutely correct that I refused to involve the Slovak Republic in the latest €90 billion military loan for Ukraine.

As a rule I stay out of our @NATO allies’ internal debates, but I have to comment on the political jousting in #Poland over the official statement by the Speaker of the Polish Lower House of the parliament (Sejm) that Poland will “not become a US fortress” or an “American aircraft carrier” in this part of the world. For three decades every Polish government-left, center and right-has sought to increase US military presence in Poland, as has every allied nation on the eastern flank threatened by Russian aggression. To hear a senior Polish politician who ranks number two in the country after the President in effect overturn the strategy that has defined Poland’s objectives for decades begs two questions: 1. Is this now Polish official policy, i.e., was the Speaker’s statement coordinated with the Polish government? 2. How does this kind of inflammatory rhetoric help buttress transatlantic relations? As someone who has advocated for years for permanent US military bases along the eastern flank of @NATO, especially in the Northeast Corridor, I have to ask: Cui bono?
