No, calling the killing of Joseph and Hyrum Smith a "shootout" really doesn't fit the historical facts. A shootout implies some kind of mutual, somewhat even confrontation between armed parties, like a duel or a back-and-forth gunfight in the open. What happened at Carthage was a mob of 150 to 200 armed men, many disguised with blackened faces, storming the jail where Joseph, Hyrum, and two companions were being held as prisoners under the state's protection. The guards either stood by or actively helped the mob. Hyrum was shot and killed almost immediately when the attackers fired through the door. Joseph did manage to fire back with a small smuggled pepperbox pistol, wounding a few of the assailants before he tried to escape out a second-story window and was shot multiple times. The whole violent episode inside the jail lasted only a couple of minutes at most. Joseph and Hyrum were outnumbered dozens to one, with limited ammunition, while facing a large, organized group with muskets who had come specifically to kill them. Eyewitnesses like John Taylor and Willard Richards, along with the great majority of historical accounts, describe it as a cold-blooded murder or assassination of defenseless prisoners, not a fair fight. That's why it's remembered as martyrdom in the face of persecution rather than some dramatic Western-style shootout. The self-defense Joseph showed was courageous, but it doesn't change the lopsided reality of the mob lynching that took place.

Insisting Joseph Smith died in a shootout is disingenuous—but that's what I'm starting to expect out of Ethan. It was his strategy in the debate and in his posts about us since. Framing it like this creates a false idea of what happened. Joseph Smith was murdered by a mob.

The reason Galatians 1:8 gets quoted so often is that many critics believe it is a simple, one-verse refutation of Joseph Smith, the Book of Mormon, and the Restoration. The passage says: "But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed."— Galatians 1:8 The argument usually goes: Joseph Smith claimed an angel appeared to him. Joseph Smith taught things not found in modern Protestant theology. Paul warned about angels preaching another gospel. Therefore Moroni was a false angel and Mormonism is false. The problem is that this argument only works if you assume several things that Paul never says.

Cardon went too far tonight in his jokes about @emuse1955. Some of us in the live pushed back on that. I joined the stream last minute and frankly I apologize if I did not push back hard enough. With that in mind many of the very Catholics outraged by Cardon’s jokes are huge fans of the Catholic @BruceSaiFun and I have yet to see any of them condemning his regular ludicrous online behavior. If you are going to judge LDS by Cardon’s bad taste jokes… should we judge Catholics by Sam Shamouns behavior? How about we don’t. How about we all join together in trying to avoid personal attacks online. I am happy to apologize if I did not push back hard enough.
