@FIFABrit @BrknBallsSports This is why Americans don’t care for soccer. We like contact sports, not princesses that flop after a little contact.

@ussoccerfeed You can call it whatever you want, but the mental edge was gone. From Tuesday nights-Friday it was “we have to win this for balo, that can’t be his last game.” 24 hours before the game, it’s announced he gets to play. Now that mental edge is gone, and Belgium feels slighted.

I fundamentally disagree that in a World Cup round of 16 match there’s anything that is going to provide the opposition with bulletin board material. And again, if it affected out mentally that’s PATHETIC.
Aaron Pitters@aaronpitters

@ussoccerfeed It was a positive until it wasn't. It was bulletin board material for Belgium and 100% inspired them to kick our ass. And we were not at it from the first whistle. It definitely had a negative effect on our mentality going into that game with the whole world hating on the team.

@riverofcustard @Aquarius_fr @lamoucheduc0ach Wrong, you can pass with your thigh, however this should probably be a yellow. Similar to juggling the ball up and heading it back is a yellow because it’s a trick to circumvent the back pass.

@CalcioMoneyball @burner0703 The whole Belgium gameplan was make Dest and Pulisic play defense, they were hunting them because they knew it was an easy goal scoring opportunity. Can you show me their MLS ties?

USMNT was in the game against Belgium, playing much better after Gio subbed on, score 1-2, when our best player broke his leg trying to shoot - then an MLS player fucked up worse than we’ve ever seen, and the game / dream was over (done). #facts

🚨 Lautaro Martinez was already on a yellow card when he scored the goal. Despite that he crossed the Barrier and went up to the stands to celebrate This is a Yellow Card offence which would've ruled him out against England. So the Ref and VAR decided to forget about the Rule😤

Would you keep Mauricio Pochettino as the USMNT 🇺🇸 head coach? If yes, why? If no, also why?

This whole article is another example of why Zlatan, Beckham, and Pochettino have called out the culture of American sports. Our star Christian Pulisic was actively trying to engage in “Load Management” last year during the training camp. This type of stuff just shows where we are as a culture. The lead up to the biggest tournament of your life, you are load managing? Load management will be the death of all sports in America. Especially, Basketball and American Football.
Tom Bogert@tombogert

🇺🇸 From the inside read of the USMNT World Cup campaign... which really started when Mauricio Pochettino took over and found some culture shock: “The situation was worse than we really believed,” Pochettino said last month. Ahead of their first training camp in Austin, Texas, that October, he and his staff expected to meet players who “would be so desperate to help (and) come to the national team.” Instead, “we received a big punch,” he recalled. They felt they were the only ones excited for the World Cup to start. Christian Pulisic, the team’s star, left that camp early to return to AC Milan, a decision that was described as “load management” and roundly criticized by U.S. national team veterans, including Tim Howard and Alexi Lalas. Pochettino went along with that plan publicly, but it was symptomatic of dynamics that had to be fixed. He encountered players who had too much power, who dictated time off, and who sometimes used it for golf outings or meals with friends. Pochettino felt he had to strip away that power. The teardown was, at times, tumultuous. A March 2025 window, which culminated with losses to Panama and Canada, “was painful,” he’d later say. “But it was necessary … for the players to realize that (doing things) this way, it is impossible to arrive in a good condition for the World Cup.” A big read, with @PaulTenorio and @HenryBushnell nytimes.com/athletic/74291…

Right conclusion, wrong reasoning. Don’t be reactionary. We don’t need to appease casuals. The performance was a joke, but it’s just one game. The rational for not extending him is that essentially his entire tenure has been mediocre. There’s not a lot of “good” to go off of.
Doug McIntyre@ByDougMcIntyre

Landing Mauricio Pochettino to lead the #USMNT was a triumph. Rehiring the coach who oversaw the most humiliating World Cup loss in program history would be indefensible. ⁦@FOXSoccer⁩: foxsports.com/stories/soccer…

@Mike220870 @FrankCastl74925 @CJohnCC @ldock93 And they took the lead shortly after. It’s a mindset at that point, hold this lead and let’s get out of here. Colombia picked up a red going into halftime against Uruguay and managed to hold on.

@FrankCastl74925 @CJohnCC @ldock93 Yep bc Weah got an early red card for stupid unsportsmanlike conduct vs Panama and screwed the team & they lost the game they needed to win. I watched it. USA are never streetwise enough and always play ‘naively’.

No comparison. Landon avoided Europe and wanted to be considered elite despite playing in MLS. He's the ONLY player to have earned a 1 rating in a Champions League match. At least Pulisic has been a constant player in the top leagues.

To compare Pulisic’s World Cup to Donovan’s 06 cup is so apples to oranges. 1. Pulisic was much more involved and simply played better except for the Belgium game. 2. Donovan was horrible for two of the three games in 2006, with the game against Italy being a good one.

@tmcfar @ProspectsUsmnt No, mls clearly had influenced over the national team. Those guys are given more call ups generally without performing well than guys in Europe. Young guys who stay regress. It’s not the pipeline. They should be going to Europe as soon as possible

This is always the response from the MLS shills. They refuse to admit their players hurt the NT and/or didn’t properly earn their spots. Of course any honest person can admit Pulisic and Dest played poorly (I have tweets individually about both doing so).

@ProspectsUsmnt Yeah, MLS superstars Christian Pulisic and Sergino Dest really showed up big time against Belgium.

I keep seeing people bring up how we got to the QF’s in 2002 and haven’t been there since. It’s a misunderstanding of our place in the ecosystem. We lucked into the QF’s in 2002 based off what our level was. Everything went right to get there. We weren’t a top 8 team in the world at that point. Not even close. Along the way we probably faced some bad luck that balanced it out such as a very good group in 2006 and some underperformance, losing to a very beatable Ghana team in 2010 Round of 16 or not even qualifying in 2018 despite clearly being a WC level team (even if we were down that cycle). In that span we’ve lost to 3 teams in the Round of 16 that were better footballing nations (twice Belgium and once Netherlands). In 2014 Belgium was significantly better than us player for player and dominated us. Yes, you can say we played a good game for what we were and kept it close and had moments to win, but it ignores how dominant they were. In 2022 we played Netherlands close and just weren’t as good or experienced. In 2026 we had a terrible performance at the wrong time, but the game was on even terms and essentially everything went Belgium’s way in that game and nothing ours. We were not sharp and those games are part of football, but were able to be competitive in dictating the tempo and I think you can say we legitimately were very close to having the better players on the field than Belgium. It’s a process to improve our finishes in the WC. You can lament how we haven’t gotten to the QF’s since 2002, but we got lucky in 2002 and people have overshot the steps it takes to get there consistently. We didn’t play well when it mattered in 2026, but the main benchmarks that help you win those games we have significantly improved over time. There’s room for legitimate criticism, but it’s towards those who had an active role this cycle and the results of the current group. The larger “American soccer sucks and hasn’t tangibly improved” takes are naive IMO.

I’ve asked several international coaches now working in the U.S. what the biggest difference is compared to back home. “A lot of my players look like they’re being forced to be here.” That doesn’t describe every player, but it raises an important question about culture.
