The Sun emitted a strong solar flare on Oct. 3, 2024, peaking at 8:18 a.m. ET. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory captured an image of the event, which was classified as X9.0: go.nasa.gov/4gOCP7u

An X7.1 flare was observed from Region 3842. Stay tuned for updates!

🛠️ We experienced a Storage incident in Central US which had downstream impact to a number of Azure services. This is currently mitigated, however we are still in the process of validating recovery to a small percentage of those downstream services. This was communicated to affected customers via the Service Health dashboard in the Azure portal. We are also aware of an issue impacting Virtual Machines running Windows, running the CrowdStrike Falcon agent, which may encounter a bug check (BSOD) and get stuck in a restarting state. While this is an external dependency, we are currently investigating potential options for Azure customers to mitigate and will be providing updates via the status page here: azure.status.microsoft/en-gb/status/ as well as our Azure portal, where possible.

Coronal Hole 45 has now turned to face Earth and as such it's CH HSS should arrive at Earth in 2-3 days. The stream will more or less interact with the "possible" CME's that are on there way to Earth, and we will see a transient stream, that will all have our heads scratching.... #Spaceweather

INTERESTING! See that long dark filament to the west of the flaring region? I suspect there is a change that all this flaring activity will destabilize the filament (at least the southern end) and it will erupt.

Forecasters at NOAA have issued a rare Severe Geomagnetic Storm Watch for the first time since 2005. A spectacular aurora is likely Friday night and into the weekend. It's possible that satellite communications and power systems could be affected.

Including SWPC & NASA's models for completeness, but the details may change greatly as the CMEs travel & interact in space. SWPC currently has a G2 Watch for the 11th, but I see it becoming G3 w/ periods of G4 possible depending on timing of each arrival & mag field config.

THE PROMINENCE ERUPTION THAT CAUSED THE CME OFF THE SW LIMB: This is a 6-hour movie of a prominence eruption that produced a CME. It starts to rise slowly and then blows off a large amount of coronal plasma. Note how little of it fell back to the surface of the Sun - a fast CME.
