@BCarfree @JPWeiland @ProfHewitt Still, if this result holds, Novavax is surprisingly effective against KP.3.1.1. Too bad the mRNA vaccines didn’t post similar updated test results. Since I’m waiting until Dec for a booster, will have more time for data to come out

@BCarfree @JPWeiland @ProfHewitt Thanks for the reference. This is a primate trial with a pseudovirus. Surprisingly S31del by itself (vs KP.3) restored neutralization level to more than any variant but JN.1. That seems unlikely

What variant caused this summer surge? FLiRT did most of the work, up until August. It's sibling, KP.3, also contributed, and is now taking ownership of stubbornly high infection rates due to the recent rise of KP.3.1.1.

@JPWeiland @ProfHewitt I think mRNA should have the edge this year by targeting KP.2 vs. Novavax with JN.1. Last year both were XBB.1.5 and so NVX had the edge in lower side effects and possibly more durable protection

@ProfHewitt All I can tell you is it's very well matched this time around. More than any of the other previous boosters.

@HarryRBurger @JPWeiland The biggest factor in the summer wave is likely air conditioning with doors shut, hence focus on South and West. But this wave is higher than last year due to immune bypass of KP.3 and probably the West experiencing lower rates of JN.1 in the winter.

July 19th update: Another substantial increase this week (+26%). Wastewater signal now higher than last summer's peak, and over a month earlier. 🔸780,000 new infections/day 🔸1 in every 43 people currently infected 🔸45% higher than 12 month avg.

Is Biden running ads yet based on Four Seasons Landscaping, injecting bleach into people to stop COVID, etc.? The tagline: “I’m Joe Biden, and I remember this clearly — do you?”

I wish UI would go back to visible text fields rather than having to guess which “tap here!” text is actually a form entry.

🚨NOTE!🚨 If you have an Apple Silicon 14" or 16" MacBook Pro & still need to update to Ventura 13.6 (possibly Monterey 12.7) Make sure your built in display is NOT set to 60 Hertz before updating! It needs to be ProMotion or will boot❗️or black screen. More info in replies👇

@nextdoorsv @luckytran Case positivity rate is still somewhat useful, even though testing rates are low. It usually starts climbing a week before wastewater.

People often say COVID cases are rising but there are far fewer cases than any other time. Wastewater shows that's false. There are far more cases now than the first summer of the pandemic, and this year's pattern is ominously similar to the lead up to the huge Omicron surge.

@missmayawolff @yunlong_cao No, evades does not indicate how much immune bypass capability it has. Looking at the NT50 log chart alone, looks like a 60% reduction in neutralization from XBB.1.5 to the same with F456L added

F456L-carrying XBB*, like EG.5, is rapidly rising. Meanwhile, XBB*+L455F+F456L is also growing fast. Some updates explaining their advantages: 1) F456L evades serum neutralization, even after XBB infection. 2) L455F+F456L combo adds on evasion and could also boost ACE2 binding!

@tynemouthsw Recapping was needed for 1999 - 2005 era systems due to a bad batch of electrolyte. While it’s true some older systems also have bad caps and all electrolytes degrade over time, it’s much less common. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor…

@Derek_a_Franks @teavangelize @mkarolian @EricTopol Additional infections increase risk of severe outcome so it’s best to reduce # of infections until better vaccines and treatments available. COVID not over but some of these studies are being misinterpreted

@Derek_a_Franks @teavangelize @mkarolian @EricTopol Not true. CD8 T cell action down regulated in infected cells only. Breakthrough infection produced broad memory B cells. But new variants reduce AB binding and thus infection protection is only a few months. Severe illness prot lasts at least a year.

The XBB.1.16 variant, with a decided growth advantage as seen in India, is starting its overtake to become the dominant one in the United States #variant-proportions" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tra… Clinical implications are unclear, but likely not a significant wave here. @Catlove40476297 @TWenseleers Vaccine-triggered antibodies are narrower than those obtained via a breakthrough infection, only targeting the spike for example. Mutations with immune bypass advantage seen in recent omicron variants don't just target spike.

@rootlabs @TWenseleers Variants evolve either way, but whether or not they'll actually spread well now is mainly a function of immunity. Considering that vaccination improves immunity for specific serotypes, it may very well change the immune status, thereby affecting which variants succeed more..?
