Of course I don’t really know, but I’m inclined to say that the difference is how well-crafted the complaints were for Joss. Charisma insinuated that he wanted her to have an abortion and Ray Fisher insinuated that his editing decisions were racially motivated. I think those two unproven issues were what elevated Joss’ status to “radioactive” I may be wrong but I think David has far more documented claims of just straight meanness on set that Joss ever did. But for some reason the yelling, screaming, tantrum stuff on its own doesn’t make you radioactive. Hollywood is a weird place.

Joss’ fall is a really interesting case study. He had a witty/nerdy character, was a very talented writer/director but at times very demanding. Because of Buffy, he became a strong symbol of a feminist-ally but in reality his relationship to women was a bit more complicated, a bit more dysfunctional, and a bit less noble than people thought. Surrounded by beautiful women, and being historically dorkish, he took advantage of opportunities to sleep with cast/industry members (no claims of non-consensual) and was not monogamous/faithful. He also had a mean/sarcastic side that would come out at times, especially if you annoyed him. His troubles erupted when his ex-wife decided to expose his affairs to the world. Then Charisma aired some old gripes she had with the way he treated her after she became pregnant during a later season of Angel. Then vague and unsubstantiated stories about on-set behaviour emerged. Then when he took over the dumpster-fire that was Justice League after Snyder left, the actors didn’t like the way he wanted to change things last-minute and the one actor (Ray Fisher) alleged it was a racial thing. All these things together put too much PR heat on anyone thinking of working with him. He was not the feminist hero anymore. Usually actors don’t speak out against mean directors because it affects their careers (even Ray Fisher seems to have struggled to get meaningful roles after the JL stuff). But enough damage was done that Joss seems to have had no work for 5 years.
