@ddent42 @nicolegelinas You don't think that there aren't people in Queens effected by this too? Admittedly, those areas are the more right leaning ones, but come on...

Hochul also has to be thinking: Long Island is no longer *really* an important swing region for her. She heavily lost both counties in 2022 and still won. As long as she keeps up anti-Trump turnout in Westchester, etc., she is fine ... politically, for her, blaming the strike on Trump to constituents not affected by the strike is a winner.

@mattyglesias You and I went to the same college around the same time, I mostly learned this at the Civil Rights museum in Atlanta in 2024...so stop. I learned what these tactics were after getting interested in political things around 2015 and learning about Alinsky.

I guess I went to better school because this is exactly what they taught me — it’s a brilliant case study in disciplined, strategic, non-violent action.

Governor Hochul can be the Margaret Thatcher of New York State, if she can hold firm (a big if). You will never fix crazy union costs and rules in New York unless you demonstrate you can stand up to the worst offenders -- the LIRR work-rule overtime featherbedders -- and politically survive.

If you want change in American entertainment, stop posting about it and start patronizing it. Stop complaining about how "woke" it all is; start investing in artists. If men like Elon look at arts patronage not in terms of how his investment might enrich himself but in terms of how it would enrich society, things will change VERY quickly.

I can't help thinking that if the British Government brought the energy it has to prevent the "far right" from entering the country to preventing illegal immigrants from entering the country there might not be a "far right" in the first place.

One of the reasons given for the importance of charging private car owners a $9 fuck-you tax (I'm sorry, "congestion pricing") to drive through the bottom half of Manhattan was "cleaner air." Organizations like @TransAlt, @OpenPlans, @StreetsblogNYC and many others have used bullshit environmental arguments in their push to end private car ownership and put everyone on bikes and/or public transit, ultimately succeeding in their capture of the Department of Transportation of America's largest and most important city. "Motonormativity." Communists LITERALLY invent operational words and phrases they think will CREATE reality rather than define it, which is why I hate these animals with such passion.
Colin Wright@SwipeWright

@ConceptualJames It's also a real thing. Motonormativity.

You are right. Other countries have a trade deficit with us in education. This is good! That said, protectionist arguments revolving around IP are also valid. As are arguments that we should educate our own kids better to take a greater proportion of these spots. I would also investigate the idea that if you come for education, you must stay for many years after grad. That would involve changing immigration practices/law though.

@russell_rivera @marcportermagee True but for certain subjects like stem America should wish to be the greatest brain drain on Europe and the rest of the world. It really benefits America and makes them number 1. Why would you want some great researcher to go to some other country like France or Switzerland

@sharghzadeh I live here, own a business here, and have a car. I use it to see my clients and do things outside the 5 boroughs. Thoughts?

I'm sick of cars in Manhattan. I'm sick of the smell, pollution, noise, traffic, blocked intersections, injuries, deaths, etc. When will this Island be governed for the vast majority of its inhabitants? Bridge and tunnel people can take trains into the city, like we do.

@nicolegelinas It also puts our economy at risk, long term. Who would want to keep putting people in a central location subject to infrastructure closures like ours? That said, I am not well enough informed to weigh in on the specifics of the dispute.

It is never a good time for a strike, but the fact that New York has already proven that many of our highest-paid people can work from home indefinitely in a crisis puts New York in a stronger position than in any other previous strike. New Jersey stupidly did not take advantage of this -- nytimes.com/2025/05/17/opi… -- but we can!
