Kyle and I had a really challenging existence for many years. But we luckily took the time to figure out our differences and that was something he instigated with a conversation in his bus around how we each managed our racing teams. I was super eager for us to get on better terms. But it was he who made the effort for that to be possible. We did some media together also to laugh through some of the things we put each other through many years ago. Most recently we had even been discussing him running my Late Model at Wilkesboro this summer. He seemed extremely happy and we had planned to meet up next Thursday to get his seat to the shop. He laughed over the idea of his fans and JRM fans having to cheer in unison during that race. Kyle was one of the greatest drivers in NASCAR history. No one can deny that. But he was also a father, a husband, brother, son, and a friend to many. My heart is broken for the Busch family. I will never be able to make sense of this loss but I am thankful that we had found a way to become friends.

At a complete loss for words, Kyle Busch was an idol to me all my life, he was the best to ever do it. I met Kyle for the final time a couple weeks ago, never could have fathomed it would be my last. Rest in Peace Kyle Busch. #KFBForever

We are saddened and heartbroken to share the news of the passing of Kyle Busch, a two-time Cup champion and one of our sport's greatest and fiercest drivers. He was 41 years old. We extend our deepest condolences to the Busch family, Richard Childress Racing and the entire motorsports community.

Some people commented about the replacement of the two EA-18G Growlers with two FA-18F Super Hornets from the boneyard or the production line. First the production line is ending, the last airframe is being assembled. Pulling a standard FA-18F Super Hornet out of the boneyard and trying to modify it into a Growler face several structural roadblocks. The internal rewiring and structural airframe changes are too extensive to do as a retrofit. Boeing has stated this is cost-prohibitive and structurally impractical. The EA-Growler has over 90% shared design with the FA-18F Super Hornet; however, Boeing made tremendous changes to its structure and aerodynamics during its conversion from the multirole fighter to an electronic warfare aircraft. For example, Boeing removed the General Dynamics M61A2 Vulcan 20mm cannon from the nose of the airframe to create an internal processing bay. The airframe was also modified in that the wingtip Sidewinder missile rails were replaced with permanently mounted Northrop Grumman AN/ALQ-218 tactical jamming receiver pods. The addition of heavy electronic warfare pods changed the weight distribution of the airframe, which resulted in a flight characteristic referred to as Limit Cycle Oscillation, which is a severe shaking of the wings or fluttering of the structure. To counteract this unique aerodynamic load, engineers added wing fences, stall strips and reshaped the fairings to eliminate wing shake. The last phase of the redesign included molding canoe-shaped antenna fairings onto the fuselage and placing a satellite communications dome behind the canopy. Last but not least, the aircraft were from the Fleet Replacement Squadron, Electronic Attack Squadron 129 VAQ-129 (Vikings). The frontline deployable squadrons did not lose any assets, so I’m guessing the training pipeline at VAQ-129 will probably absorb the internal aircraft loss directly from its large pool of 55 Growlers.

@SarahKhldi @British_Airways this isn’t a BA issue it’s a BCN issue. I always always have this problem at barcelona. i travel through frequently and my bag always gets to me a day later once i reach my destination.

This is a very important question. "from the left, the Growler will not turn off your cell phones." *sneak pass* *Your phone is now dialing your side piece and your wife at the same time.*

@thestinkeye I just realized they were growlers why do we have a demo team for this scarce and precious EWAR asset

The F/A-18 Hornet and Rino has an override for fcs logic via the pinky finger on the stick. It was not a FCS logic error it was simply the airplanes slamming into each other. The trail went in front of the lead and the lead tried to catch up, ultimately having the lead setting their nose between the verts

Their rate of closure appears to have been very low, and when the one aircraft "landed" atop the other, it is my working theory that the feedback loop on the lower aircraft's fly-by-wire flight control system (FCS) was not seeing the proper pitch response for the control surface input it was generating due to the other jet on its back and it increased the control surface input until it flipped both jets up (the jet on top had a similar problem because it's FCS was not seeing the proper pitch response in the opposite direction and increased flight control input in the opposite direction "sticking" it to the bottom aircraft). The combination appears to have resulted in a severe nose-high-attitude for both aircraft that departed controlled flight and ultimately assumed a nose-down pitch before both sets of aircrew ejected.
planefag@planefag

@RSE_VB If this isn't AI, that funny looking flutter-about means they must've both been damn close to stall speed. I'm used to air to air collisions generating a cloud of debris and damn little else

Terrifying video shows two U.S. Navy EA-18G Growler jets collide midair during the second day of the Gunfighter Skies Air Show at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho on Sunday. All four crew members successfully ejected and are being evaluated by medical personnel, the U.S. Navy confirmed to FOX News Digital. The midair crash happened at about 12:10 p.m. MDT while the aircraft were performing an aerial demonstration during the air show, officials said.

I will generally follow this rule save for one thing: We don't have Growlers to spare. F/A-XX, which will apparently have capability overlap with Growler, is more critical than ever. We need it now.
aniemyer@aniemyer

I’m will follow my usual rule & not comment, bloviate, or try to monetize the Growler mid-air that happened today. Four people are going home to their families tonight, that’s what’s really important. The Mishap Board (all that really counts) will figure it out. Won’t be pretty

@CnnmnSchnpps @MCCCANM @TrentTelenko Judgement only. SJU-17 only talks to the back/front seat via the selector in the back seat. It’s a 3 position switch and what we can see here is a front seat initiation so “norm”

Good illustration of ejection seat technology: Look at where the rockets on the seats fire. Both jets are inverted when the ejection is initiated, so the seat should fire the pilots straight at the ground… But they are smart. They fire enough to clear the jet, then re-orient themselves & fire enough to slow the descent. Once they do, the seats cut the occupants loose from the straps & deploy the parachute. Look where the parachutes deploy in relation to the jets. Absolutely incredible technology!
Brick Suit@Brick_Suit

Did a slow motion zoom of the collision. Looks like the left vertical stabilizer of the lower plane might have embedded itself in the fuselage of the upper plane. Scary stuff.

I understand and completely support the mission of the Blue Angels, but why is there a Growler Demonstration Team? Seems like that’s an unnecessary risk of critical personnel and technology.
