Let's say for argument's sake that the conspiracy theory that members of the former regime is working behind the scenes to sabotage this government. Okay. What is the government, with its huge mandate and the entire state apparatus at its disposal, doing about it besides whining?

@MaliniP @arivalayam @INCIndia Isn't the alliance at the centre vs local dynamics different. It seems to benefit having two options useful if the larger point is to get BJP out of the way

You allied with the DMK @arivalayam to contest the Assembly elections. How does the defeat of the DMK-led alliance become that of the DMK alone? The DMK stood by @INCIndia in its lowest times. You have 9 sitting MPs in the Lok Sabha on the strength of the DMK led alliance in the last parliamentary elections. The life of this Lok Sabha term is until 2029. So where do lie the political loyalties of these MPs who were elected on the strength of the alliance with the DMK? And is this not putting tremendous pressure on existing norms of legislatures in our federal democracy?

The verdict has gone against the DMK government. Half the ministers in the Cabinet have lost their seats. We faced collateral damage for no fault of ours. Now, BJP is eyeing Tamil Nadu. The question before us is clear: Should we stand with those rejected by the people’s verdict, or should we unite with the force that fought against BJP and fight to stop BJP from ruling Tamil Nadu? #Tamilnadu

West Bengal election results are the most disappointing of all. A state that was once regarded as the intellectual and cultural capital of the country trusted a right-wing populist party for 15 years and ultimately voted the fascists to power. Truly a sad day for India.

#WATCH | Kolkata | BJP's Suvendu Adhikari shows his winning certificate after clinching the Bhabanipur assembly seat with a landslide against the West Bengal CM and TMC candidate Mamata Banerjee. He says, "This was very important. Defeating Mamata Banerjee was crucial. This is Mamata Banerjee's retirement from politics... This time, too, she lost by over 15,000 votes. Muslims voted for her openly. In Ward No 77, all the Muslims who came out to vote voted for Mamata, and Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists blessed me and made me win. This victory is a victory for Hindutva... All the CPM's strong supporters voted for me. The CPM had 13,000 votes in Bhawanipur, and at least 10,000 of them were transferred to me. I also express my gratitude to the CPM voters down there. All the Bengali Hindus voted openly for me. Along with them, Gujaratis, Jains, Marwaris, Purvanchalis, and the Sikh community all voted openly for me… Amit Shah called me two or three times. He also expressed some concern about Bhabanipur. I told him a while ago. I haven't spoken with anyone else. I wasn't allowed to use the phone, so I didn't speak. I'm going to tell him now. He's waiting. I also need to get the Nandigram certificate."

The problem with having a criminal President who promotes conspiracy theories, incited an insurrection, & lies habitually about everything and is enabled by an entire political and media movement that does the same is that after a while people don't believe him and create their own narratives. #whcd

We are deeply disturbed by @POTUS sharing this hateful, racist screed targeting Indian and Chinese Americans. Endorsing such rants as the president of the United States will further stoke hatred and endanger our communities, at a time when xenophobia and racism are already at an all time high. We ask @realDonaldTrump to reconsider, delete this post & recognize the indelible contributions of Asian Americans to our great country.

Today, exercising the provisions of the Constitution of India, more than two-thirds of the AAP MPs in the Rajya Sabha have merged with the BJP. Seven MPs have signed the document, which was submitted to the Hon’ble Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. I, along with two other MPs, personally handed over the signed documents.

Communion between Christians and Muslims takes shape under the mantle of Our Lady of Africa. Here, in #Algeria, the maternal love of Lalla Meryem gathers everyone as children, within our rich diversity, in our shared aspiration for dignity, love, justice, and peace. In a world where division and wars sow pain and death, living in unity and peace is a compelling sign. #ApostolicJourney

Killing diplomatic representative who come to negotiate was a practice morally abhorred by 5,000 years of civilization. But now--after the last month's wanton killings of leaders--it seems to have become accepted as a normal practice. The descent into extraordinary barbarism is extraordinarily rapid.

It's astonishing that you, a world leader who many respected for standing up to an illegal attack on your country, now support an illegal attack on another country. It completely kills your credibility. Right now. Iran is Ukraine. You may not like to hear that but that is a fact
Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський@ZelenskyyUa

It is unfortunate that the UN Security Council has once again failed to demonstrate effectiveness and act decisively in the face of such a global threat as the Iranian regime's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. No one should be allowed to block such globally significant sea lanes or undermine the security of dozens of nations through terrorist attacks against the freedom of navigation. We faced a similar challenge in the Black Sea when the Russians attempted to block our ports and civilian shipping—Russia was trying to suffocate our economy. And we found a way to solve that problem through decisive action, not inaction. Now, we see a similar problem on a global scale. The Strait of Hormuz must remain open to all vessels that sustain vital economy lifelines and maintain normal international trade. Countries in the region have spoken clearly on this, and we support the aspirations of the people of the Middle East and the Gulf for peace. Peace and security in this region directly impact stability, market predictability, and the cost of living in every single country. Such problems and this war must not be prolonged. The world needs a functional UNSC that acts more decisively to resolve acute security challenges of global magnitude.

Fascinating piece by @Shubhrastha on the imperative to feminise foreign policy. The argument is both similar to and different from @NMenonRao’s piece. My disagreement with both though is that IMO women tend to get “hypermasculine” in realpolitik. Banadaranaike, Gandhi, Meir, Thatcher, Bhutto, Meloni were/are seen as much tougher, cold & calculating than their male counterparts. They IMO essentially “outman” the men. I say this in policy terms - not in gender where each of them were the absolute pinnacle of feminine grace firstpost.com/opinion/why-wo…

I remember with what dignity Zidane left the field (the "hottest" field in football, the World Cup final) after being insulted by Materazzi. He butted him (as Materazzi deserved) and then in full pride and dignity and with no complaint--actually with not a single word--Zizou just left the field. Greatness!

French center-right senator denounces the U.S. president: "A Turkish proverb says, 'When a clown moves into a palace, he doesn’t become king; it’s the palace that becomes a circus. ' This fine team has decided to create a rival to the UN. Since his Peace Council was established, Trump has launched more military strikes than Biden did during his entire term. Every time the Epstein affair resurfaces, bombs explode somewhere in the world to create a diversion. Bomb more to make more money." "Trump, the only elephant in the world who walks around with his own china shop, now has only two options, both equally bad. To withdraw pitifully, claiming—without convincing anyone — that he has achieved his objectives, or to trigger an escalation with outcomes already known from Vietnam, Iraq, or Afghanistan: a quagmire and, in the end, a shameful departure."

I don’t dismiss this argument out of hand. Sometimes it is better to work inside to make a bad policy better. But Power is different. She had enormous credibility she could’ve used to sound the alarm on the Gaza genocide. She chose status, and ends as a cautionary tale.
Jonathan Guyer@mideastXmidwest

Samantha Power, at last, addresses Gaza's Problem from Hell "I don't just get up and decide today what US foreign policy is," she told the University of Notre Dame this week. "That is the price of being in government." The comments were perhaps the most in-depth to date on why the Pulitzer-winning author of A Problem from Hell: America and the Age of Genocide stayed on in the Biden administration throughout the Gaza catastrophe, which many have documented as a genocide. Biden's former USAID administrator spoke at the 32nd Annual Hesburgh Lecture in Ethics and Public Policy, hosted by the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies. Notably she did not discuss Gaza or Palestine during her prepared remarks, but a student posed a question to her in the Q&A. Here is my quick transcription of this remarkable exchange. Student: In your book, A Problem from Hell, you criticize US's passivity in watching genocide unfold. You also recognize the power of using the word genocide, the G-word, in recognizing genocide. Yet, as you yourself held a position of power in government, you failed to call out the genocide in Gaza, referring to it more as a humanitarian crisis. Given the importance of recognizing genocide and acting on genocide, I'm wondering why you did not name the genocide in Gaza and when you were in a position of power and if you continue to hold that. SAMANTHA POWER: Thank you. Yeah, I mean, Gaza was the most difficult humanitarian crisis I worked in, certainly at USAID and probably my whole career. My job was to get food and medicine to the people who were living in Gaza, who were not getting access to clean water, to electricity, to adequate medicine, and of course, were suffering in many cases from acute severe malnutrition. While I know that there's an impulse on the outside for any official, especially a senior official who has the privilege that I had, to make my own foreign policy, that's not what happens when you go into the government. I don't just get up and decide today what US foreign policy is. I certainly as somebody who wasn't then, and I'm not now, looking at evidence as a lawyer, and I'm trying to get food from Point A to Point B with my men, and above all I'm supporting my teams, who are doing God's work 24-7 to do that, and failing by the way a lot of the time, because of the obstruction by the Israeli government. But when you are in government, that is the price of being in government. It was a very different, analogous circumstance, but on Syria, I had lots of debates and discussions with President Obama on the "red line" and what to do, and this and that. Once I have failed to convince someone within the Situation Room about a course of action that I might favor, then I'm out there representing the administration's position. And for some of you, that is just going to be too big a price to pay. For me to have the opportunity every day to get food from Point A to Point B, it was worth all of the understandable criticism that comes from outside. Like I totally respect your position, your frustration… But for me to have resigned and not be doing that work, also not be doing energy repair—not that I was doing it personally—but supporting energy repair in Ukraine when Putin's taking out the energy, not supporting girls education online for the Afghan girls and women who'd been taken out of classrooms by the Taliban. We were doing so much every day that seemed really significant and impactful. The price of being part of a team that can do that great work, an administration that can do that great work, is you are going to be part of what the president ultimately decides the policies and the positions are. So other people might have handled it differently, could have decided that it was better to be back in academia and criticizing from outside, or again mustering evidence as a lawyer even to judge intent and whether the intent rose to the level of genocide. My view was I had the greatest job in the world to try to do as much good as I could in the fleeting time that I had in that position.

Sri Lanka’s decision to rescue the Iranian soldiers and grant innocent passage and docking facilities to the vessel reflects the finest traditions of our foreign policy. It is consistent with the proud legacy of independence and non alignment that has guided our nation for decades, and with Sri Lanka’s principled advocacy for the Indian Ocean to remain a Zone of Peace under the United Nations framework. At a time when many nations yield to pressure and expediency, this decision demonstrates courage, balance, and respect for international norms. Congratulations to the President for standing by these principles. Moments such as this remind us why we take pride in being Sri Lankan, a small island with a generous heart and a long tradition of principled diplomacy. 🇱🇰
