ONGC’s Crisis Management Team (CMT) already possesses robust in-house capabilities to independently manage large onshore blow-outs. This collaboration is designed to further elevate CMT’s technical depth across both onshore and offshore domains, including challenging deep-water environments, through enhanced knowledge sharing and synergised operations with international specialists. The Wagner Coup in Russia may have ended for now but it leaves in its trail some unanswered questions, a perceptibly weakened Russia and more importantly, several lessons in geostrategy for India. Imagine if Wagner had attacked oil refineries in Russia (we did witness a massive fire on the Voronezh oil depot yesterday). In 2021 India's oil imports from Russia accounted for 2% of total oil imports, in 2022 this number rose to 20% and to 42% in 2023. Saudi imports have fallen by 16% and American imports by 38%. Is it wise to close all other doors and corner ourselves into this dangerous over dependence on Russian oil? What happens to these oil arrangements if the Ukraine war ends up leaving a Russia that looks more weakened and less in control? A weakened Russia would mean a stronger role of China in shaping Putin’s foreign policy. Can we afford such over dependence on Russia, both for oil and for our defence requirements?
