Dante's Inferno treats neutrality just as harshly as actual sin. People who took no side in life, the "uncommitted," land in the Vestibule of Hell. Since they fought under no flag, their punishment is to chase a meaningless, blank banner for eternity. This is the contrapasso that corresponds to their actions. For sitting out the spiritual war (choosing neither good nor evil), Dante considers them people who "were never alive." He has them chased and stung by hornets, while maggots on the ground feed on the blood. In other words, for refusing to risk shedding blood in life, the blood now spilled for their efforts is wasted in the dirt. The maggots evoke death, for these are people who never lived. Dante, who was exiled for his own political life, saw wealthy families of Florence opt out of important issues because they had too much wealth and comfort to lose. Dante doesn't even give them the courtesy of mentioning them by name — the uncommitted are all nameless. There is no neutrality in moral matters. If you stand for nothing, nothing is what you'll become.

8/8 This thread isn’t to criticize anyone, it’s just a reflection on what I’ve learned over 3 years. With a few more years and regulatory clarity, I believe the industry could’ve solved most of these issues.

Facts were king (before 2000s), then comprehension took over (2000-23). Now, machines outclass us at both. The remaining edge is human: direction, judgment, intent, resolve, courage. Time to rethink which skills we cultivate. Yesterday: facts. School drilled us on capitals, river lengths, and muscle groups, because no one realised how ubiquitous Google would become. Today: comprehension. The internet made facts free, so we prized pattern‑spotting and “critical thinking”, competitive exams became a tool for scouting "critical thinkers", and their premium increased. Now: machines comprehend. LLMs pass medical exams, write code at 2 a.m., and condense 50‑page briefs in seconds. Pure understanding is no longer a moat. Next frontier: human stance. Direction means choosing why; judgment means weighing foggy trade‑offs; intent means aligning action with principle; resolve means shipping when it’s messy; courage means owning outcomes. So what? Audit your stack. If it’s all knowledge plus analysis, you’re racing silicon uphill. If it’s conviction, narrative, moral clarity—you’re scarce and hard to automate. Rethink what you measure, hire for, and train. Facts and frameworks still matter, but the premium has shifted to people who can decide, commit, and pull others along.
