None of the dudes at work are talking about the NBA playoffs. In fact I’ve heard more talk about Tottenham possibly getting relegated.

@thedulab The first couple of songs on Iceman are a glimmer of the past if you enjoyed older Drake music. The other two albums are not it. Iceman is still better than most of the stuff he has released since Her Loss.

@Empty_America That’s the catch… something can be disproven is that most of the time these schools pass these initiatives they suddenly become harder to get into. Even the rate at which these smart kids whose families make less than whatever the amount is drops.

University of Chicago is now 100% free including housing and meals for median income households. Elite colleges have never been cheaper for the average kid. If you can get in!
The University of Chicago@UChicago

UChicago is launching an initiative that will guarantee free tuition for families with incomes below $250,000, starting in fall 2027. The College will provide free housing and meals and waive fees for families with incomes less than $125,000. Learn more: ms.spr.ly/6014vuUPM

@xwanyex That take is such a 100 IQ position that people espouse passionately. It crumbles at the slightest bit of scrutiny.

@enjoyer_liberty It's actually sad because I would argue that the more prestigious the institution, the more likely you are to experience this shift. Insufferable 105 IQ people with high verbal intelligence are the worst.

I went into undergrad as a pretty generic conservative who supported Trump and had some libertarian leanings on stuff like weed. I graduated college as a right-wing extremist/borderline fascist. I know many men who had the exact same experience after the exposure to academia.

@MyLatinLife The only way this happens is if the Europeans move to South America and enforce European ideals/culture to South America. Desafortunadamente Latino America sigue siendo pobre tanto en dinero como en cultura y lo seguira siendo por mucho tiempo.

@Alt_Azn So for those of us who move up the social ladder, don’t remake the mistake of raising your kids in white suburbs. Raise them in an affluent asian enclave.

I think it depends where you live as well, I went to school in Seattle and UW is objectively the best school in the area no debate. UCLA, Berkeley, UT Austin, UMich, UVA, UNC, Georgia Tech, UIUC, and maybe UI come to mind. There are more that could be included but it would also depend on what you want to study. The OP is specifically talking about SEC state schools which are in no way worth the money for out of state tuition imo.

Incredible zoomer moment a minute ago, a dude was walking down the street in a t shirt advertising that he was in the same fraternity i was in, I mention it at the crosswalk & he quickly looks at the ground & shuffles away.

@MarmotRespecter 100% agree which is why I have always found it stupid to make these distinctions within incomes based on race. Poor people engage in poor people behavior for the most part and the inverse is also true.

idk i grew up rural poor and there's a perception that the (mostly suburban) online right has, that the poorest rural whites arent as bad as the poorest urban blacks and they maybe have a point solely in terms of violent crime towards strangers but everything else is just as bad, and there simply are no strangers in rural areas, so people don't murder a random neighbor because it would be immediately avenged but character-wise i can say the poorest whites are as bad as the poorest [any other race]

@WestsideLAGuy well yeah this evident with the ideological capture of elite institutions. Most people more or less believe the same things, they just all look different. Brazil-like demographics with DC-like groupthink.

This more so applies to your second point but a good litmus test to this kind of info coming from Cato/think tanks is that your BS Meter should be going off. Most immigrations statistics is filled with selective mental gymnastics. Like Marine Le Pen said “immigrants are like wind turbines”

This is very true… I’ve heard stories of weaker students getting better packages than more qualified oos students for the large state schools. A good way to “bypass” this is to basically take a gap year in the state you want to go to school in and then apply again with in state tuition rates.

@Empty_America if I were a parent of an about-to-be high schooler I’d make very sure we were living in a good state school state — VA, NC, FL, MI and I would be coming up with excuses to hang around a few of them with the kid (season tickets at a cheap sport) do not get stuck in Louisiana

@sebsmore @Alt_Azn Johns Hopkins is in the news for being 43% Asian-American in the freshman class. When you include international students, it’s over 50%. That’s not Ivy, but it’s east coast elite.

I don’t doubt there’s a kernel of truth to the idea some white parents don’t want to send their kid to a majority Asian school. But I guarantee the type of white kid who wants to go to Cal-Tech already has a half Asian friend group.
