In the early 20th century, we were formally recognised in government records. Our ancestors appeared in census rolls and official documents, identified, counted, and acknowledged, even if not always by our own name. With that recognition came an expectation: that land would be secured for communities who had been left without it. It was a step meant to follow, to anchor what had already been recorded. But in 1927, that step was not carried through. There was no single moment where recognition was taken away. Instead, it began to slip through what was left undone. What existed on paper did not hold in reality. The effects of that moment did not remain in the past.
