“I think it’s important for everybody to say, ‘By the end of my career, what would I have liked to accomplish?’ Lasker President @clairepomeroy said at #JointMeeting2026. “Remember, grants and papers are surrogate markers. They aren’t why you’re doing what you’re doing. They allow you to do what you want to do.”

Today I'd like to honor the memory of my mentor and friend, Roger Tsien, born 1952 February 1. Today would have been Roger's 74th birthday. Most know Roger for his 2008 Chemistry Nobel Prize with Shimomura and Chalfie. Roger made GFP into the versatile imaging method it is now.

There is a pressing need to reduce, if not eliminate, cancer care disparities not only in the United States but also globally.
Dr. Claire Pomeroy@clairepomeroy

Data reveals stark US #healthdisparities: Black women have higher cancer mortality rates than white women, despite lower cancer incidence rates. The gap is particularly pronounced for breast cancer, from which Black women are significantly more likely to die. ow.ly/3jPv50XtSI2 #CancerResearch #RacialDisparities

I am often asked what the one skill is that young scientists should work on the most. My answer: your storytelling via presentations. The better you present, the more your ideas travel, the more doors open, and the more people want to work with you. A few tips: Have one clear storyline that you want people to remember. Repeat it. Build your talk around it. Your slides are there to support you, not to talk for you. Think about the best TED Talks...if a slide has more than 10–15 words, it’s a distraction. Engage the room with confidence. Don’t hide behind the podium. Stand in front of your audience, make eye contact, and own the stage. A strong talk is a multiplier for everything you do. It helps you get published, win grants, and get hired. What is your single best tip for a memorable scientific presentation? hashtag#ScienceCommunication hashtag#PhDLife hashtag#Postdoc hashtag#PublicSpeaking hashtag#AcademicChatter hashtag#Leadership

Drs. Dirk Görlich and Steven McKnight have won the 2025 Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research for showing that low-complexity domains of proteins lack structure on their own and yet can form assembled states essential to cellular functions.
