Ahmed Shihab-Eldin has been detained by Kuwaiti authorities without charge since 2 March. This is not about reposting or keeping Kuwait safe, it is about controlling the narrative amid a wider crackdown on freedom of expression across the GCC since the regional conflict began. @SherineT says we must sound the alarm otherwise we are all not safe.

UN representative for Amnesty International @SherineT tells @SkyYaldaHakim says the charity is seeing a "huge crackdown on freedom of expression" across the Gulf since the Iran War began. Her friend, Kuwaiti-American journalist Ahmed Shihab-Eldin, was detained nearly six weeks ago in Kuwait after posting video content related to the Iran War. 🌍 trib.al/zff6Z7W

A U.S. President launches a war without an end game or post-war plan? Unheard of!
Gregg Carlstrom@glcarlstrom

Trump is basically calling up every journalist in his phone to workshop different timelines and goals for his war. In the past two days: @washingtonpost: the aim is "freedom for the people" of Iran @axios: maybe we can "end it in two or three days" with a deal @nytimes: might be "four to five weeks", I have "three very good choices" who might take control in Iran @abc: actually, nevermind, we killed those choices He doesn't sound convinced by any of it. He's throwing spaghetti at the wall. Ultimately I suspect he just wants to say he "solved" a problem that has vexed every American president since Jimmy Carter. But there's no clear idea what that looks like and no plan for how to get there. And there are plenty of possible scenarios in which Trump declares victory and leaves the region with an absolute mess

Watching CNN’s coverage of the ‘Board of Peace’ - interesting they can have an entire conversation about the next steps in #Gaza , need for Hamas to demilitarize but without mentioning a word about the situation on the ground, ongoing Israeli strikes etc. Do better @BeckyCNN

The @WashPost has now laid off its Asia editor, its New Delhi bureau chief, its Sydney bureau chief, its Cairo bureau chief, the entire Middle East reporting team, China correspondents, Iran correspondents, Turkey correspondents, and many more. The world is becoming less America-centric by the minute while the United States is becoming more America-centric than ever. It is just a depressing yet somehow perfect summation of our current moment that one of the most important newspapers in the history of the country - one that has actually shaped the history of the United States - doesn't think reporting on the world is of any use anymore. What an utterly perfect encapsulation of where we have arrived.

🚨🇻🇪🇺🇸 VENEZUELAN AMBASSADOR: “THE U.S. TARGETED US FOR OUR OIL AND NATURAL RESOURCES” Venezuela’s ambassador just accused the U.S. of launching military attacks not for freedom or democracy, but for oil and control. Speaking at the UN, he said Venezuela is being targeted for its natural resources, and warned that if powerful countries can bomb or kidnap leaders without consequences, then no country is safe. He compared U.S. actions to colonialism and said this could unravel global peace. "Venezuela is the victim of these attacks because of its natural resources. Our country's oil, energy, strategic resources and geopolitical position have historically been factors of greed and external pressure. We are faced with a logic that harks back to the worst practices of colonialism and neo-colonialism. Accepting such a logic would open the door to a deeply unstable world. This scenario not only threatens Venezuela, it threatens international peace and security as a whole. The message sent to the world is that the law is optional and force is the true arbiter of international relations." Source: @acyn

🚨🇻🇪🇺🇸 VENEZUELAN AMBASSAOR: U.S. ATTACK WAS “ILLEGITIMATE” AND A “KIDNAPPING” Venezuela’s ambassador has condemned the U.S. operation, calling it an illegal act of aggression with no legal basis. He accused Washington of bombing Venezuelan territory, causing civilian and military deaths, and abducting the country’s president. Samuel Moncada: “Venezuela was the target of an illegitimate attack lacking any legal justification by the United States. This included the bombing of our territory, the loss of civilian and military lives. And the kidnapping of the president.” Source: acyn

So after banning 80 top Palestinian officials from traveling to the U.S. for the UN General Assembly opening, the U.S. then votes against a resolution to allow Pres Abbas to be able to deliver his speech virtually. Luckily the overwhelming majority of states disagreed.

Dismayed by the official sanctions that the US government has decided to impose on the UN Special Rapporteur, @FranceskAlbs We recall that Special Rapporteurs are independent experts. They are not appointed to please governments or to be popular but to deliver their mandate. Francesca Albanese is working tirelessly to document and report on Israel’s unlawful occupation, apartheid and genocide, on the basis of international law. Governments around the world and all actors who believe in the rule-based order and international law must do everything in their power to mitigate and block the effect of the sanctions against Francesca Albanese and more generally to protect the work and independence of Special Rapporteurs.
