Lake Winnebago has a Trophic State Index (TSI) of approximately 65, placing it firmly in the eutrophic category. This means the lake is highly nutrient-rich and biologically productive, making it the prime candidate for recurring blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms. These blooms can produce toxins that make the water unsafe for swimming, harm pets and wildlife, and in severe cases contribute to fish kills by reducing dissolved oxygen levels. Significant wind events like today's can lead to significant mixing of the water column, stirring up sediment and releasing nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen into the water. Once these nutrients are suspended in the water column, warm temperatures and abundant sunlight create ideal conditions for blue-green algae to rapidly grow and spread. As a result, the meteotsunami and intense wind-driven mixing may increase the likelihood or severity of algal blooms in the days and weeks ahead, especially if the hot, calm weather thats forecast in the following days occurs.

USGS gages near the Indiana Harbor Canal on the Lake Michigan shoreline recorded multiple rapid water level fluctuations of 2.5 to 2.7 feet over 30 to 40 minute periods this afternoon, beginning around 1:30 PM CDT! This is the second seiche that occured today, with the other one happening on Lake Winnebago!

👋 MEET OUR TEAM: Ethan Mok Ethan, a meteorologist from Chicagoland, boasts years of experience in severe weather forecasting. He has been storm chasing for six years and has been forecasting for even longer. Ethan graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology from Northern Illinois University in 2025. Shortly after graduation, he participated in the ICECHIP field campaign, where he contributed to the research of hail-producing storms.
