. @AmazonHelp for the Echo Show, there’s a skill called ‘Sleep Sounds’. Starting today, saying ‘Alexa, Open Sleep Sounds’ goes to the (genuinely terrible) Ambient Noises instead of the skill. Now I can’t get the skill to open. 🙄

@DickThorne1776 @AmazonHelp An Alexa Routine might be starting it on a time schedule or some other trigger. Please check the "routines" section of the Alexa app - sometimes these can be created without manual entry. If there's nothing odd there, then it's probably a bug on Amazon's end 🫣

@sleepjar @AmazonHelp There’s nobody around it or the remote in the middle of the night. The tv is literally on the carport, so unless the cats have learned to talk, I doubt that’s it.

@AmazonHelp what the hell is this? I’ve factory reset and still this stupid screen for this stupid App that we never downloaded and do not pay for comes up. It just pops up like a screensaver for no reason and plays a 4 second melody on repeat indefinitely until I switch it off. What in the actual hell? Sleep Jar bullcrap

@AmazonHelp @DickThorne1776 Looks like you're running our Alexa Skill on a Fire TV. Since Alexa Skills aren't "installed" like traditional apps, sometimes they can be accidentally opened by a misinterpreted Alexa voice request. Leave the Skill anytime by saying "Alexa, stop" or "Alexa, exit".

@sleepjar Wow I actually didn’t see your response to this now! I was getting multiple errors and now it won’t even let me open the skill on my echo at all. It just plays from “Amazon ambient sounds” 😞

Sleep Jar isn’t working on my Alexa and I cannot even *begin* to tell you how disrupting the effects of not having that specific brown noise is to my life personally

Unfortunately it's not possible to remotely start our content on an Alexa device from within the Sleep Jar mobile app due to technical limitations on Amazon's end. We've encouraged them to build support for this capability for years, but it seems unlikely to come to fruition. In the meantime, workarounds include using the Bluetooth connection capability between your phone and your Echo device, use a Google Cast speaker (just tap the Cast icon in the Sleep Jar mobile app), or use the Alexa app to remotely trigger an Alexa Routine.

@sleepjar I always used Alexa to play your sounds but now she says I need to download the app and link it to my Alexa account. I did so and it’s linked, but when I select the sounds in the app, it only plays them through my phone and not through my Alexa. Any ideas?

Hey @kjthelegendary, "Background Mode" is a feature we built to allow customers to turn off our custom visual interface on Echo Show devices so that the skill can run in the background and allow Alexa to respond to requests not meant for our skill while our skill is playing audio. Background Mode is off by default, but we provide spoken instructions to customers about how to turn it on if it seems like they're making a voice request that isn't intended for our skill. Background mode can be turned off by saying "Alexa, ask [skill name] to disable Background Mode"

@AmazonHelp what is “background mode” In an Alexa device. The @sleepjar brown noise skill forced me to enable it and now I can’t disable it. I can’t find anything online about what “background mode” actually does on my echo show.

@sirjray Hey @sirjray, it sounds like you might be using Alexa on a Fire TV or on an Echo belonging to a device group with a Fire TV in it? In these cases, it's best to append "skill" to your requests to help Alexa route them properly. e.g. "Alexa, open Sleep Jar skill"

Hey Amazon, is there a reason why almost EVERY request I give Alexa to play a sound from sleep jar, I'm given the response "here's what I found from Firetv" instead of playing the sound on sleep jar? It's getting real old real fast

I’ve been very impressed with @sleepjar since I started using it a couple months ago. Some of the stories have taken me several tries before I finally get to hear the ending.

@emceehammy Our Alexa skills are operating normally. Is it the Fire TV app you're having troubles with?

@sleepjar Any update on when Alexa will be functioning normally again? I really miss my sleep sounds and am about to give up and buy a regular sound machine.

We're aware of an issue with our Fire TV app suddenly not preventing the Fire TV from entering screen saver/sleep mode, causing audio to stop playing. We reached out to Amazon since we did not make any recent functional changes and hope to hear a resolution from them soon.
