If you do, don't bring on anyone affiliated with "NIAC" or any so-called national Iranian organisation from any country. Most of these are regime-affiliated. Also, anyone who doesn't reference @PahlaviReza's influence in this movement isn't credible. You can not like/support him, fine, but not acknowledging his influence and the fact that people in Iran are chanting his name is disingenuous and deliberate at this point. He is on the Republican Convention 2026 program.

BC government announces they are amending the eviction notice from 4 months back to 3 months. Why they never consulted anyone in the industry to begin with is a head scratcher.

@kshahrooz Ever read Life of Pi? It gave me a lot to think about and let me make peace with choosing the better story - for myself.

Bit of a weird, rambling post, but I think buried in it might be some half-baked meditation on faith: My family is moving from one house to another today. The house we're leaving was a happy one that saw us though a lot, including the stresses of the pandemic. I'm hoping our next house will be equally blessed. Last night, I was overcome with a desire to give gratitude for the good fortune I've enjoyed here and express hope for the next chapter to be as good. But I'm not a person of faith so I really didn't know to whom I should direct my gratitude or wishes. (Don't laugh, but instead of a religious ritual, I listened to Leonard Cohen's "If It Be Your Will", which is essentially a prayer). I have lived my whole life as a non-religious person (wavering between calling myself an atheist and an agnostic). But increasingly I find myself with a spiritual need that I can't seem to fill with anything. Perhaps it's getting older and each day being reminded of my physical frailty. Perhaps it was the fact that the start of the pandemic that left me with the feeling that everything I value can crumble quickly. Maybe it's watching my kids grow and wanting some higher force to watch over them when I can't. I don't think I'm going to be turning to organized religion any time soon (I found Ayaan Hirsi Ali's recent conversion more risible than profound). I know all the arguments against religion. And I am constitutionally incapable of blind faith. But it's a void that I definitely feel. I don't know if others experience it and how they deal with it.

@mackinprof I'll admit to being mildly offended Stu ;-) You have often approved my selection of teacups on Zoom calls. Thanks for the clarification, the subject made it seem like those taking OCs were the focus. Looking forward to reading it.

While I used to agree with that conclusion, my sense is that these days, people, regular everyday people, want to be better acquainted with science. They are, of their own accord, trying to become more scientifically literate on subjects that matter to them. So much so, that researchers are increasingly expected to write “lay reviews” to ensure the content is accessible to all. Not just for the public, but for policy and decision makers too that need to make sense of scientific content. This is a good thing! This will improve scientific literacy across the board. Treating people as though they cannot handle scientific content is going to be viewed as patronizing (even if they dont fully understand). Worse even, i would argue, since it is content they want to understand. Furthermore, vaccine hesitancy was an issue well before COVID. It’s clearly a scientific area where the public wants to better understand what is at play. I think that elevates the importance of engaging the public on the topic. If the debate could simply focus on the key areas on contention, it could be very helpful for dispelling myths that are circulating provided the expert is skilled at communicating to lay audiences (which they often are not, but its a skill that will be increasingly necessary in the future). Vaccine hestitancy is a by-product of scientific elitism, arrogance and paternialsm. Moving forward this century science is going to determine a lot of things in peoples lives. We need to ensure people trust the scientific process and bring them along for the ride or they’ll dig their own rabbit hole when its denied to them.

Agree with the article's conclusion (but not all its reasoning). A one-on-one debate on a technical subject is often unhelpful. The audience can't gauge the strength of an argument b/c it can't assess, in real time, the accuracy of data cited. vox.com/2023/6/22/2376…

@srdastouri @TheVanderWal @VancouverSun It is a very complex social issue. Housing people who are in addiction or who have mental health issues is not the same as housing someone who through circumstances is homeless. We need to address these issues separately.

What would you suggest given your experience working in SROs? As an outsider, I keep hearing (rather loudly) the solution, or at least first step, is adequate housing. Hence my original question. I admit to not being overly convinced that is going to do much given the state SROs are in and the other challenging issues this population faces.

@TheVanderWal @srdastouri @VancouverSun This is not just a "housing issue". This is a social issue. How do we help people with mental illness, how do we help people with addiction, and how do we make our streets safe for everyone?

@Robert69328252 @VancouverSun Ill admit that was an assumption I had and was curious if it was true. The calls to provide adequate housing are many but I cant help but wonder how long it will take before they look like the SROs you’ve worked in and then we’re back to square one.

@srdastouri @VancouverSun I have worked in the majority of SROs in downtown Vancouver. I don't know if any building is designed to withstand the abuse and damage that the tenants inflict on it. You can move people into a beautiful new building and in a month you would not even recognize it.
