Better late than never. I wrote 9,313 words for my 2025 year in review. Sold my house, left my last startup Limitless, took a few months off, quit caffeine, had my 2nd year of no alcohol, became obsessed with Claude Code, and started fresh at Sesame. paulstamatiou.com/2025-year-in-r…

We need to stop talking about product design in absolutes… there are no rules. Everything is made up. Do what makes sense and feels right.

excited to share what we’ve been working on recording beautiful iOS demos is still weirdly painful in 2026 Halogen is a native macOS app that sits next to your iOS Simulator and turns recordings into polished, shareable videos in seconds no confusing timeline. no AE. no workflow hacks just record and export

yea definitely a possibility, i remember how often twitter marketing materials would differ compared to the core product experience when i worked there. i imagine the core of it would remain the same though: message bubble expanding + streaming inside it, which is my general issue. i'll be on the lookout for it in the app

@Stammy are we sure this isn't just done for marketing materials and doesn't happen in the app? they tend to go crazy with motion for these promos

the new telegram bot streaming update - i feel like this is a good example of why it's not amazing to do a text streaming animation inside a message bubble. feels jarring to have both the bubble height animating one way and the text doing it's own thing. would be a bit better if the streaming animation was a bit less intense - it does a lot: scaling, y offset, blur and some quirks (look closely at "can't" and "travel" as they come in, or lines reshifting after settling) they were in a tough spot though, can't easily blow up the rest of their app design and change how it looks and works just for bots (though they probably should consider if they're seeing tons of openclaw/etc usage)

you have to be a little obsessed and crazy to truly push on craft and design. smaller teams with passionate builders shine here. craft is spending 7 hours on the minuscule polish thing you thought was going to take 30 minutes but you keep going deeper. the thing that is absolutely of trivial necessity that most would think is a waste of time. sane people would compromise and find another solution. crazy people that eschew the standard way of designing and building common interactions, UI, and hardware just to see how it feels, or to tug at an inkling of a vision then do that about 100 more times throughout your product before you're remotely proud of it. it can't be outsourced or handed off to others to implement.

@signulll yea I gave up on this and moved all my stuff to self-hosted and self-backed up Immich. It definitely does not offer any real AI functionality but I like being able to own my own data for things as critical and meaningful as my photos.

the current set of photo products (apple photos or google photos) are so deeply broken that it’s no longer even funny. when you really think about it photos are the densest behavioral corpus most ppl own from locations, ppl, food, relationships, health, taste, regressions, & moods but the dominant ui is still grid of shit ton of squares sorted by time. apple/google have nibbled at this w/ memories & face clustering but it’s all decorative. nobody is treating the library as a layer for understanding the person. that’s a huge huge opportunity for an ai native experience. obviously non trivial to do well, but it’ll be fun to push boundaries here.
