It's not truly acknowledged but Syria was a truly independent and powerful regional power from the 1980s to 2011. Not only did they fight and even defeat Israelis in some battles during the 1982 invasion of Lebanon, like during the Battle of Sultan Yacoub (the screenshots), but Israelis always feared them and ensured in each of their advances that they wouldn't mess with the Syrian forces. Fast forward to the 1990s to mid-2000s: they ruled over Lebanon with full liberty, massacred Americans in Iraq by arming Takfiris (including Zarqawi) to the extent that Americans were forced to pay some Jizya to Assad just to calm him down, and most importantly, humiliated Israelis during the 2006 Lebanon war. In power, prestige, and independence, it's not inaccurate to say Syria was close to what Iran is today. It's incomprehensible how a bunch of animals in 2011 destroyed what their forefathers built by sweat and blood for some petty sectarianism.
