Cover 3 Wk is showing up more because it solves a structural problem defenses have been dealing with for years. You want a clean way to add a run support player without distorting the back end or forcing the nickel into the box. Weak rotation gives you that. The safety can insert late as a support player while the nickel stays in a more natural leverage position, especially in field strength systems where the structure is built to the wide side, not the tight end. That matters because it keeps the coverage intact while still handling the run. You maintain a true middle closed structure, keep spacing in the secondary, and still get an extra hat involved without tipping the picture pre-snap. The quarterback sees a stable shell, but the post-snap rotation changes the math. Where it becomes even more effective is with match conversion. Now those underneath defenders are not just spot dropping, they are reading distribution and tightening windows. That forces the quarterback into disciplined progression sequencing and throws that require precise timing and placement into smaller access points. Clean structure for the defense. Compressed decision-making for the quarterback. That is why you are seeing more of it.
