Vijay is not another Jayalalithaa Senior Tamil journalist Samas @writersamas has written an article arguing that Vijay cannot be compared to MGR. He regards him instead as another Jayalalithaa. But he is not another Jayalalitha. It is customary to view Vijay’s political support base through the lens of his personal charisma; however, it ought rather to be understood from the perspective of the crowd itself. This crowd was not created by Vijay; rather, Vijay is merely the present object of worship for that crowd. What we are witnessing is an irrational mob. Its roots lie not merely in opposition to the DMK; it stands opposed to every form of logic inherent in contemporary democratic politics, having grown thoroughly disillusioned with the existing democratic system of governance. Its craving is not for the acquisition of power; on the contrary, it surrenders whatever meagre power it possesses to its heroic icon, prostrating itself in total submission. Bringing this crowd within the structured framework of a political party is no easy task; it will not accept any form of hierarchical leadership. As far as this crowd is concerned, it accepts only Vijay—and nothing else. Transforming this mob into a cohesive political party will be the primary challenge Vijay will face. This is because he will be compelled to construct the very party structure—complete with the hierarchies—that this mob has already rejected. — Ravikumar
