@mikeflynn68 @llewellynsteven @DrLukeCraddock How is there choice? To pay the £9.5k tuition fees and pay for the accommodation, a student loan is required. Normal people don't simply have that cash available!

@llewellynsteven @DrLukeCraddock The money is not "created out of nowhere" it is loaned to you at a preferential rate by tax payers. Nobody made you take the loan you chose to do so.

Student loans are becoming a headline area of interest recently. As a doctor who trained and is now working in the UK, I thought I would share my situation. Despite working for almost three years, my loan has continued to grow, and now sits at this amount. [1/7].

@DrLukeCraddock Many fail to mention the student loan ‘tax’ is only for poor people (unable to afford university without loans). Wealthy families who pay private school fees at £30,000/year/child, find £9,750/year tuition + living expenses an absolute bargain!

@DrLukeCraddock @CharlotteCGill If I took out £77,000 on credit card and paid less per month than the interest then I’d expect the amount to increase. However any one with any brain pays off more than the minimum amount each month. Nothing in the world stopping you paying more.

@loftgroovv1 @DrLukeCraddock What's the other option? Don't get a degree? To get a degree, unless you're rich, you rely on the loan for the tuition fees and maintenance. Without student loans there'd be no doctors, nurses, lawyers etc

@DrLukeCraddock It sucks, I agree, but I don’t like the lack of accountability every graduate suddenly exudes on this issue. You signed and took the loan, you knew the terms, you spent the money, and now of course it’s all ‘unfair’ and should be wiped.

Imagine those living in Greenland just now Peaceful, relatively prosperous, minding their own business Then suddenly threatened with invasion by a fascist, authoritarian regime No reason. They’re not at war, no conflict, no social unrest… Now living in fear. Barbaric!

@pwsimerimiaw @NicoReznick Yeah they don't all use alcohol wipes either... Again, immunosuppressed so I'd really like a quick arm wipe before opening a vein... Septicaemia isn't what I came for!

Went for a blood test today, and the nurse gave me such shitty attitude when I asked her to mask because I'm immunocompromised, I rescheduled with another HCP. When someone gets unprofessionally aggressive with you, it seems unwise allow them to stick you with sharp things.

@Wonderland_Z00 @whitesundesert Exactly this. It’s just stupid to not realise 2 issues = double the time. People would soon complain if they didn’t feel they had time to explain their problems or if the GP runs late for their whole clinic bc someone decided to unload months’ worth of issues in 1 appt lol

For me the most grimly amusing thing about a GP appointment in the UK is they often tell you up front you can only discuss ONE thing, as if they’re a prime minister taking questions from a room. If you have two issues, you need two appointments.

In the U.K., you can’t see a GP without describing your health issue to the receptionist for them to decide whether the issue warrants the attention of a doctor. Receptionists don’t have a medical degree, so it’s rather confusing why the NHS has deemed them qualified for this.

@ElleWatts77 @Wonderland_Z00 @whitesundesert Exactly. I have chronic conditions (autoimmune). New symptoms.... Is this autoimmune? Caused by my meds? Caused by my anaemia which is caused by my immunosuppression? Is it a flare? Bodies are complex and the gp needs the full picture to understand what's going on.

@whitesundesert I write them a list. Hand it to them and tell them “you choose” Most GPs say they will deal with as many items as they can. In some cases the different symptoms have a common cause and presenting all of them together aids diagnosis.

@whitesundesert And I'm not a doctor qualified to decide if those 2 issues are related or not, so surely a doctor needs ALL the symptoms at once to diagnose? This ruling has always baffled me... Just tease the doc with one symptom and see if they can crack the diagnosis... 🤯

I once asked a high-performer why they stayed with their company for 10 years. I expected them to say "the salary" or "the bonuses options." Instead, they said: "A few years ago, I had a family emergency. My manager didn't ask for a doctor's note. They didn't check my performance. They just said: 'Take care of your family, we’ve got your back.'" Retention isn't a "perk." It's a feeling. If you want to keep your best people in 2026, stop looking at them as "resources" and start looking at them as humans. Perks like free snacks and fancy offices are great, but psychological safety is what keeps the lights on.

A candidate kept applying for the same role at the same company. Every time it was advertised, he applied. And every time, he wasn’t shortlisted. The reason? A gap on his CV. When HR saw his application for the fifth time, they decided to call him. The interview went exceptionally well. Confident. Clear. Highly capable. Curious, HR asked, “Why the employment gap? And why haven’t you been working despite being this impressive?” He paused, then explained: “My wife fell critically ill. I resigned to take care of her.” He got the offer. Today, he is one of the company’s top performers, and he’s now being lined up for a promotion with a better compensation package. Behind every CV gap, there may be a story of sacrifice, love, and responsibility. Let’s never forget the human side of hiring.

@SamaHoole “Use wool, save the planet” is false. Wool production means methane, overgrazing, and desertification (FAO). The textile industry causes 10% of global emissions (UN). The problem isn’t veganism; it’s overproduction and fast fashion. Reject ignorance and get better informed.

It’s not ‘vegan leather’, it’s plastic. It’s not ‘vegan wool’, it’s plastic. It’s not ‘vegan leather’, it’s plastic. It’s not ‘vegan fur’, it’s plastic. It’s all plastic, and every time you wash it, or damage it, or try to dispose of it, that plastic ends up in the water, in the earth, in the air. Meanwhile, wool is 100% renewable and biodegradable. Reject veganism. Use wool. Save the planet.

@2laurabone @1goodtern This has me wondering... When screening for donor organs, do they check for pervious covid infections (concerningly most people have had it) or at least for subtle signs of covid damage? 🤷 🤔

@1goodtern My Mother died of pulmonary fibrosis w/in two years of diagnosis. It progresses quickly. The only cure is a lung transplant and the wait list is long. She was approved only after being on life support but by then she was too weak for the surgery.

@Maoskyist Unpopular opinion : profits on rent should be forbidden. You rent your apartment, at the end you own an apartment while the guy living in it gets nothing ? And on top of that you get profit ? Bullshit. Your profit is being the owner at the end.
