@SeanTrende Is there such a district? Of the actually-existing ones, the closest was Biden+18, right?

The "Is Massachusetts a Gerrymander" question is so interesting. I just ran some back-of-the-envelope simulations without political data and trying to keep districts compact while preserving town/city lines. The result? 1/

@KyPaleo @Brendan_m_Hodge @GakulaRizzen @TeddydAquino Yes, that’s why I said immigration restrictions (unlike murder) are a creature of positive law, not natural law. It’s always wrong to murder, but countries can and do have a range of immigration policies, just like they can and do have a range of tax policies.

I’ve seen various people posting as if the new bishop of West Virginia were currently in the US illegally: Evelio Menijar-Ayala did enter the US illegally from El Salvador as a teenager in 1990, but he became a legal US citizen 20 years ago in 2006.

@theraghav @Brendan_m_Hodge @GakulaRizzen @TeddydAquino The American people have consistently voted against mass migration, for deportations. We only import migrants because the corporate class and the elite class hate White people and love cheap labor from abroad. Every country has a right to deny entry or deport foreigners.

Mormons are amazingly dishonest about their faith. They say that the papyri Joseph Smith translated was destroyed in the Chicago Fire, when in fact a large portion of it was recovered undamaged. Enough of it was recovered, in fact, for us to determine two very specific things about it: 1) It was an ancient copy of an egyptian scroll we have other copies of. 2) We know that it was a funeral scroll, and that Smith's translation was bogus - such to the point that even the LDS church now says that Smith didn't literally translate the document, but offered a "spiritual translation."

@KyPaleo @Brendan_m_Hodge @GakulaRizzen @TeddydAquino Illegal immigration is solely a creature of positive law. In most of the 19th century, there was no such thing. Do you think coming to the US back then was like stealing? If the offense is one of positive law, then the remedy is too.

@Brendan_m_Hodge @theraghav @GakulaRizzen @TeddydAquino Lol no. The correct restitution is to cease what you're doing. If a migrant trespasses here, they are stealing housing, food, labor, etc. They need to go back home. This is like stealing, you keep the merchandise and never pay for it. You stay in America and never pay.

@GakulaRizzen @TeddydAquino @Brendan_m_Hodge Frankly, if I can't judge his lack of action on this part or even question it, you certainly have no authority to accuse me of X or Y sin, nor do you have the authority to demand I seek the confessional. I have a right, as an American and as a Catholic, to want sovereignty.

@HeTows Where do you see that it’s a toss up for Congress? The Democrats have a lead of around 6 points in the generic congressional ballot. The fact that that may not be enough to win the Senate (the betting markets show a coin flip) is because the map is unfavorable for them.

These polls are really weird. The pattern I see is this: 1. Trump's approval ratings are very low. I assume the Iran war has at least something to do with this. 2. However, Republicans seem to be doing pretty well in midterm polls. Slight advantage for Senata, tossup for Congress. Not bad at all for a party approaching midterms. Since Trump isn't seeking re-election, the logical conclusion is that Trump has no reason to care about his low approval, since it doesn't seem to influence voter behavior.

On the apropos of Bennett's joint run with Lapid, here's a weird question: could Itamar Ben Gvir appear on the same slate as head of the Islamist Ra'am, Mansour Abbas? The answer is: probably not, but... he could appear on the same slate as someone who could appear on the same slate as someone who (...) could appear on the same slate with Abbas. In fact, any two parliamentary factions in the present Knesset are "connected" in the sense that through an unbroken chain of joint slates, mergers and splinters we can get from any one of them to any other. Even more interestingly, it turns out that the Arab parties are genealogically more closely related to Ben Gvir than to Ganz or Sa'ar. Take a deep breath and try to not get dizzy. Genealogically, there are three paths: A) a Religious Zionist - centrist, B) a Religious Zionist - Haredi and C) a Religious Zionist - Arab path. This wildest one I left to last. A) From Otzma Yehudit to New Hope (Sa'ar's party): 1. Religious Zionism (Otzma Yehudit + Noam + Tkuma [Smotrich's party]) - 2022 2. @BMcGrewvy @DouthatNYT Is it so different from what CS Lewis said? In any event, I think most observers just saw it as a bit of jiujitsu to use the German bishops’ own rhetoric against them.

I'm not saying he's as bad as Francis, but you must admit that's an incredibly low bar! And for him to go out of his way to invent some kind of hierarchy where other issues are "much larger and more important" than sexual morality, including religious freedom (does he not even see the irony?) was an entirely unforced error.

"It is not the role of the Church to evaluate whether a particular war is just or unjust." Your Excellency, is not the Magisterium the authentic interpreter of the affirmations of Scripture and Tradition? Is that not the entire point of having a teaching office?
Bishop Robert Barron@BishopBarron

There is a way past the absurd and deeply divisive “war” between the President and the Pope, which has been enthusiastically ginned up by the press. And it is indicated in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 2309 to be precise. After laying out the various criteria for determining a just war—proportionality, last resort, declaration by a competent authority, reasonable hope of success, etc.—the Catechism points out that “the evaluation of these conditions for moral legitimacy belongs to the prudential judgment of those who have responsibility for the common good.” The assumption is that the just war principles function, to use the technical term, as heuristic devices, designed to guide the practical decision-making of those civil authorities who have to adjudicate matters of war and peace. The role of the Church, therefore, is to call for peace and to urge that any conflict be strictly circumscribed by the moral constraints of the just war criteria. But it is not the role of the Church to evaluate whether a particular war is just or unjust. That appraisal belongs to the civil authorities, who, one presumes, have requisite knowledge of conditions on the ground. So, is the war in question truly the last resort? Is there really a balance between the good to be attained and the destruction caused by the war? Are combatants and non-combatants being properly distinguished in the waging of the conflict? Do the belligerents have right intention? Is there a reasonable hope of success? The posing of those questions—indeed the insistence upon their moral relevance—belongs rightly to the Church, but the answering of them belongs to the civil authorities. The Pope has said, on numerous occasions, that he is not a politician and that his role is not the determination of any nation's foreign policy. But he has just as clearly said that he will continue to speak for peace and for moral constraint. In making both of these claims, he is operating perfectly within the framework of paragraph 2309 of the Catechism. If we understand that the Pope and the President have qualitatively different roles to play in the determination of moral action in regard to war, we can, I hope, extricate ourselves from the completely unhelpful narrative of “Pope vs. President.”

@hf_222222 @PillarCatholic I mean, Aquinas thinks “take the sword” in Mt 26:52 doesn’t refer to people who take the sword in obedience to government authority or (in the case of the authorities) based on a desire for justice. But I don’t think people would endorse that critique in the context of Our Lord!

@lukei4655 @StevenG57428175 @billhowardesq He’s articulating pacifism, as Douthat pointed out yesterday. If that’s not what he really means, he should clarify that because he is saying that any warfare is unjust. That’s not JWT. For example, his Palm Sunday homily was way over the top rhetorically.
