Insurance is a hedge against uncertainty. Basic term life insurance is a hedge against the uncertainty of death—*when* you are going to die. Whole life insurance is a hedge against the uncertainty of death *and also* a hedge against a multitude of *other* financial uncertainties—how much money you’ll be able to save in the future, access to credit, physical or cognitive disability in old age, etc. If you have no uncertainties in your life, or don’t value the conversion of uncertainty to certainty via insurance, then don’t buy it.

So basically, the “seed oils are poison” crowd is doing the classic shuffle — tossing together a buffet of sketchy mouse studies, out-of-context biochemistry, and confident vibes to look convincing. Then they sit back smugly while everyone else wastes time debunking their mountain of nonsense point by point. The end result? A rickety tower of cherry-picked junk dressed up as airtight science.

Seed oils: Are they even correlated with bad health? I assembled ALL of the available NHANES data and linked as much as possible of it to the National Death Index and found that... It's not. Seed oils aren't even correlated with problems.

As a reminder: - The trials show seed oils are fine - The genetic evidence shows they're fine - The observational evidence shows they're fine The contrary evidence is animal studies, mechanistic reasoning, and incautious inferences from old studies without clear relevance.

Just think… 5 decades from now, your relatives are going to say “I don’t believe for one second you guys were ever locked in your house, forced to take experimental drugs, had tanks rolling through your streets, killed a bunch of old people in nursing homes, made you wear masks and then changed social distancing and public use rules every couple months, and that the government shut down practically the entire economy over a cold virus.”

Also, I remember you saying at one point that the older studies on seed oils essentially found that we wouldn’t expect to find serious detrimental effects for possibly decades? That we should look at what happens to people in old age because that’s where the cumulative effects would finally show up or at least this is what the studies pointed to. I hope I’m not misremembering or misinterpreting anything

The main determinant of seed oil intake in NHANES data is salad intake, because the seed oils are mainly in salad dressing. That they correlate with health means either a) salad is healthy or b) healthy people eat more salad. These are not mutually exclusive, neither of them are interesting, and neither of them say anything about whether seed oils help or harm health. This should win an award for “most useless data.”

Probably not @misraetel. The older studies def showed bad outcomes over a very long period of time—esp when ppl get into older ages when it becomes increasingly difficult for mitochondria to turn over and “heal” from the damage. In fact, the old studies concluded we needed *longer-term* studies to determine the extent of the damage. What we got were *shorter* studies which didn’t show anything for short-term use because of course they don’t but… we already knew this from the older studies. It takes 4 years for cells to look more like the oils you are consuming and for things to change and be affected by the oils. So… naturally we got short-term studies that don’t show anything. So… we have newer studies, but not better studies. What we need are decades-long studies that look at what happens cumulatively in the 5th, 6th, and 7th decade of life. Look at 20-year or 30-year study—basically a lifetime of eating this stuff. This where the problems will finally appear and we sort of have an indication of that from the early studies

Most people are NGMI. That’s just a fact of life living in an anticivilization. It’s not that they *cannot*. It’s that they *will* not. + Only ~2.5–3.2% of Americans have $1 million or more in their retirement accounts. + Even if we select out for people who actively save in a retirement account, only about 4.7% reach the $1 million mark… and that’s being very generous on the assumption. + Even if we select for so-called “super-savers”—people saving 15-20% of their income for 20-30 years— only between 10%-30% end up with more than $1 million at the end of it. + Fidelity’s own data (covering 25 million participants) show roughly 2–3% of their 401(k) accounts hit millionaire status — even after years of strong markets, cheap index funds everywhere, and auto-invest features. Average balances are low 6-figures, and that skews high *because* of the super-savers. This situation hasn’t really changed much since the 1950s. It has nothing to do with rate of return, expense ratios, technology, or other gimmicks. The financial advisor dog and pony show—none of that matters. Yes, saving more money does help, but is by no means a guarantee of success… not even remotely. The problem is much deeper

650 light-years away, the red supergiant Betelgeuse is living on borrowed time. One of the brightest stars in our night sky, this colossal star is a supernova in waiting. When it finally detonates, the explosion will be so ferocious that, even from this immense distance, it could briefly outshine the full Moon and turn night into day for weeks. For a short, dazzling time, Betelgeuse may even rival the brightness of the entire Milky Way, painting our skies with a light show unlike anything humanity has ever witnessed. The countdown to its dramatic death has already begun.

There has been a lot of interest in how the human body manufactures its own glucose from fat and protein A process called GLUCONEOGENESIS Designed so we can perfectly well survive periods of time without any dietary carbohydrates Here is some more information and references @nitienk @dlifein

@zbitter The way I understand it, gluconeogenesis is a horrible ROI too. It takes 6 ATP (equivalent) to make the glucose needed to then produce 2 ATP. What a waste of time, unless you are in survival mode

If you are okay with a low output lifestyle, gluconeogensis works fine. When I broke the 100 mile and 12 hour WRs (high output lifestyle) following a low carbohydrate diet I was asked by some why I fueled with ~40g of carbs per hour and didn't rely on gluconeogenesis. My response, go and try to burn 12,000 calories in 12 hours relying on gluconeogenesis and let me know how it goes. Survive and performance are not the same, but often get confused.

It’s true, tho N=1 is good for him. It’s not broadly applicable and if you follow his exact protocol your blood tests will likely be very different. Lots of people swear up and down carnivore fixed every problem they had, lowered glucose, insulin, etc. and they post their Keto-Mojo readings as proof. Yet, I eat more complex carbs and… my fasting glucose goes *down*. Eating too much high BCAA-containing food (like beef) raises my glucose. I would die on carnivore. Same meter, different food and different result. You never get these idiosyncrasies from studies

Unfortunately when you become overly reliant on “studies” with no additional capacity for discernment you become like Bryan Johnson or Mike Israetel. These people have no understanding of the fundamentals. No overall framework they’re reeds in the wind and thus inevitably cringe

Understandable but totally unrealistic. I used to live in a place where the closest access to a gym was big box. They did not allow power cleans due to they thought someone would get hit with the barbell. Plus, the free weight section was essentially a long narrow hall on the second story balcony. So… I didn’t do them. But I did do other lifts because I mean, what am I gonna do… not train? The other gym was literally an hour away and not practical for my schedule. I’ve trained at other gyms where squat rack access was limited so workouts had to be abbreviated. Was it optimal? No… but I had no practical alternatives. Most places I’ve trained have had some sort of restriction on what they allow in the gym or limited squat rack availability. Still… what am I going to do? Not train at all? That’s silly. Only exception was NC State facilities. That shit was awesome, except the whole “you have to collar your bar” on the bench press and no safeties available

One thing I can't reiterate enough Is do not allow the gym you train at impact your goals Example - if you want to get strong and need a squat rack 3x/wk at 5:30pm Probably best not to have a membership at a busy commercial gym with 2 squat racks If you are serious, find a private facility that's well equipped or build your own so there is no excuses "Couldn't get my squats done because the racks were busy" = YOUR FAULT not the person or the gym

Poast Fizeek is a low resolution heuristic for figuring out if someone you’ve never interacted with is worth taking seriously. Even for that it’s imperfect, but understandable. We have better ways of discerning that, but Twitter isn’t really built for such discourse.

This is why I wish that stupid “post fizik” response would die 1. Lots of lifters aren’t targeting appearance 2. You don’t need to practice what you preach to be correct. Most coaches aren’t in the same shape as their students, but the students still shouldn’t be disregarding the coach
