CORE Group is proud to have co-hosted a roundtable with @GWpublichealth that informed a new working paper on the health impacts of forced displacement—released during #UNGA80 and #ClimateWeekNYC.
The paper underscores this as a humanitarian priority and calls for scaled-up U.S. global health assistance to save lives, prevent illness, and strengthen security at home and abroad.
𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀:
• The U.S. is uniquely positioned to lead with strengths in data science, health information, and early-warning systems, diplomacy, and multi-sector collaboration.
• Assistance should be holistic and integrated, addressing displacement amid rapid environmental change and extreme weather.
• Smart foreign health investments advance global health security, support the U.S. economy, and create jobs.
• Centering women, children, older adults, and people living in poverty aligns with American values and reduces human suffering.
More than 𝟭𝟮𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 are displaced worldwide, a number projected to rise due to conflict, urbanization, extreme weather, sea-level rise, and more. The paper highlights heightened risks from infectious diseases (e.g., dengue, measles), injuries, unmanaged chronic conditions, and mental health challenges.
The working paper was co-authored by 𝗠𝗮𝘆𝗮 𝗥𝗮𝗼, Senior Center Specialist, @timothyholtz, Director of the 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗠. 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀, and Adjunct Faculty Member 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗵-all at the @GWpublichealth, as well as @lisa_hilmi, Executive Director of @COREGroupDC.

Ignoring climate science won’t stop the storms, heatwaves, or health crises.
We need evidence-based action—now.

@MarkWarner Do y’all think medical care is so straightforward? We’ve been screening for diabetes for 40+ years does that mean we should stop research? Workers in these industries deserve a break. Black Lung has NOT been eliminated, and there ARE reasons to try and find ways to find earlier.
