@moeamaya Yup notion got this right. We shipped the update a few weeks ago and feedback has been excellent. We dynamically swap sections based on what’s relevant on the Home Screen which is super nice.

Seems like we're coalescing around a UI paradigm to have data and agent modalities easy to access So far in day-to-day usage of Notion it feels about right

@karrisaarinen It won’t die fully. It will become much much smaller and won’t be a stand alone function that’s typically 1:1 with product wrt headcount.

DESIGN: THE FIRST AI CASUALTY I'm increasingly sure that 2026 signals the end of product design as a full-fledged stand-alone function within companies. If so, it will be the first role / function to be eliminated by AI on a go-forward basis. Instead of hiring FT designers, startups are hiring / will hire design consultants to create a design system that the founder likes (this takes a few weeks max). Once the design system is finalized, PM/Eng feed it into their AI tool of choice to generate prototypes. The design system is refreshed annually by the same consultant. Larger companies will likely not backfill design roles and will do some targeted attrition to reduce the design department to 20% the size it is today. If you're a designer, I think you have two choices: 1. Become an entrepreneur: Start a design agency and become the go-to resource for design systems for startups and even larger companies. This can be a good recurring revenue business. 2. Become a builder: Add PM/Eng responsibilities to become a product builder. Would suggest you embrace this proactively vs waiting for the other shoe to drop. I'm really sorry about this - some of my best friends and the people I admire most and have learnt the most from are designers - but it seems inevitable.

So... Vertical tabs are out in @googlechrome. I thought it would make me switch back to it, I really thought it was the one thing I needed in Chrome. I currently use @diabrowser , but here's the thing. In comparison, the implementation of vertical tabs in Chrome is just awful. It barely changed since I saw it in beta. I thought it would greatly improve during the beta phase, but it did not. So here's everything I dislike about it compared to Dia: 1. It's super laggy. 2. When collapsed, the sidebar moves down, meaning the position of the expand/collapse button shifts down too, making it much harder to find. (I ironically couldn't find the first few seconds of the video specifically because of that) 3. No keyboard shortcut to expand/collapse. 4. Collapsed doesn't move the tabs out of view, they are just tiny. 5. The amount of tabs per line in the grid of pinned tabs is not adjusted depending on the number of tabs. 6. In collapsed mode, all the pinned tabs are now in a column, which can push the actual tabs quite far down. ----- It's just awful. It was built into Chrome as a way to just say "hey we also have vertical tabs!" But the UX is simply awful. This has to be the worst implementation of vertical tabs I've seen so far yet, sadly. For comparison, I'm also showing how @diabrowser handles vertical tabs.

Tonight's refinements: - visualize custom brand colors - upload a logo to preview it next to a wordmark - focus on a single font style full screen - keyboard jumping snaps vs animated scroll Enjoy!
joshpuckett@joshpuckett

Polished up Locale some more tonight: - change font size, weight, and italic - view on dark/light/image background - save fonts to a short list (per session) - inspect all styles per family - jump to alphabetical section (hit any letter key)

@ethanfrost @HarryStebbings Exactly this! Iam wondering why everyone is talking about the loss of jobs due to AI but nobody talks about using AI to be more productive with the same amount of headcount. I think we all know our backlogs, there would be enough work to do that got deprioritized in the past

@HarryStebbings I’m having trouble understanding how a 20% layoff is purely AI-driven. It’s a reflection of a lack of cost control too. Why not just scale productivity by maximizing AI with the existing headcount and spare company morale?

I have spoken to 3 founders in the last 48 hours; all of them with 500-1,000 employees. Each of them is planning a minimum 20% headcount reduction. Said with great concern; this is about to get very real for labour markets.
