@RepJayapal denunciation of the humanitarian crisis in #Cuba is grounded in empirical evidence from her trip to the island and a human rights foreign policy. Trump's oil blockade should not be carried out “in our name.” Your critique of her objectivity is, at minimum, disingenuous. Your claim that she implies the United States is the sole actor responsible for the current situation is unpersuasive. You, not she, are the one using the word "only".

My personal politics put me close to progressive Democrats on most issues. I am a long critic—or at least skeptic—of US sanctions on Cuba, including most recent measures that exact collective punishment. But this statement is extremely disappointing in its reductionism.

I think she is right in her claim that US policy merits the main criticism. Trump's policy does not promote reforms or a democratic, peaceful transition; it promotes either the collapse of the Cuban political system, surrender, or entrenchment. @repJayapal is acknowledging a Cuban tit and is properly asking for an American tat, which is a minimal return to minimal international law humanitarian standards.

I quote: "The remaining obstacles to progress in Cuba now rest with the United States." That's where wording implies "only." US policy merits the criticism. There also many internal obstacles to "progress", broadly defined, I trust you would agree. Eso es todo.

Contrary to the dominant premises that often echo McCarthy-era patterns in contemporary Cuban Miami policy debates, the claim that the United States constitutes a principal remaining obstacle to Cuba's reform and democratic transition(I am not interested in the regime's collapse) is analytically sober. The argument does not deny the role of domestic Cuban factors, including correcting major Cuban structural flaws; rather, it posits that meaningful reform—short of capitulation—requires at least a major relaxation of the US economic war, particularly those constraints affecting energy access and economic activity with Cuban Americans and the rest of the world economy.

The assertion by the congresswoman that the “remaining obstacles to progress” for Cuba rest with the United States, as originally formulated, without the qualifier “only” introduced by you, does not disregard Cuban demands for economic and political reform. On the contrary, @RepJayapal emphasizes the need for a sovereign policy space in which Cubans themselves can implement reforms, without the distorting effects of Trump's economic war and military threats. Under such coercion levels of widespread material deprivation, most reforms are likely destined to fail.

A reminder here that we were negotiating with Iran in February, with the Strait open and Iran not even threatening to close it. Now we’re negotiating to re-open the Strait with Iran having succeeded in closing it and with more leverage. Epic failure. newrepublic.com/article/208794…

Trump's oil blockade on Cuba is suffocating an entire nation. This is a clear, despotic attempt at regime change, and civilians are paying the price.

Some thoughts about the President of the United States speaking about ending a civilization. The president speaks genocide. Anyone who has been involved in that conversation or associated actions would be complicit. And so we too must speak. Not only about crimes, but about their legal punishment.
