I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr Kamal Kharazi, former Foreign Minister of Iran whose untimely death came from the wounds inflicted by Zionist terrorist attacks. I first came to know Dr Kharazi during his years as Iran’s envoy to the United Nations in New York, and our friendship carried through his distinguished tenure as Foreign Minister. He was a man of rare learning and genuine warmth: always thoughtful, always gracious. The world has lost an exceptional diplomat and I have lost a dear friend. His mother is Masoumeh Ebtekar (known as “Screaming Mary” or “Sister Mary”), the English-speaking spokesperson for the Islamist militants who stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran in 1979 and held 52 American diplomats hostage for 444 days. She later rose to become Vice President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. His father is Mohammad Hashemi (also known as Seyed Mohammad Hashemi), one of the core leaders and ringleaders of the hostage-takers who helped orchestrate the crisis. This is the same regime whose forces have killed, tortured, and imprisoned countless innocent Iranians demanding freedom. Why are the families of high-ranking officials from this murderous regime allowed to live, study, and work freely in America — the very “Great Satan” their parents helped demonize and attack? While ordinary Iranians face execution for protesting, these elite “aghazadehs” enjoy safety, education, and opportunities in the United States. The hypocrisy is glaring.
