@ClickingSeason @runawaybit @eigenrobot @atlanticesque Thesis: where you're born is luck, "undeserved" Antithesis: luck has little to do with it, you are the product of the arduous and intentional effort of your forebearers Synthesis:

@runawaybit @eigenrobot @atlanticesque That’s what a gift is: something you don’t “deserve.” And that’s why gratitude is the response. You don’t feel grateful for that which you deserve.

@atlanticesque @ClickingSeason i have no objection to dear taoki as far as rawls goes yes i think hes both swiss-cheese brained and chestless and i resent his slapdash effort to justify charity at the point of a gun x.com/eigenrobot/sta…

i object to "luck" characterizing inheritance in discussions of desert because "luck" in this case means only "you deserve nothing, your ancestors deserve nothing, and btw we're going to make sure that's what you all get" no thank you

@lucasmeijer @gmchande Bret Victor made me realize how radically different HCI can look and just how bad most UI/UX is.

retard. LLMs being able to search through massive codebases, ones which I'm trying to either integrate or replace, has helped me a ton. I still use Helix, but a lot less, and I still have to use it to clean the slop as LLMs fucking suck at creating good non-leaky abstractions
giatt@1owroller

programming got rly boring after i stopped physically stimming the same way using neovim magicks and just started using claude code/codex for everything some people really like systems for the sake of systems or playing optimization games but i’m pretty sure all the dopamine for me came from typing out combos and then going :wq fried asf

What happens when I use autocoding is *very* strange, is something that didn't exist in myself, in the past. I write big chunks of text to the LLM and every word I type I "feel" how it is going to condition the work of the agent in one way or the other. Every word reduces the error.

@visakanv @zigabytes @justalexoki tbh finance and banking seem more boring than these kinds of thoughts! the ability to notice more subtle things is unique and produces extremely interesting material!

@zigabytes @justalexoki this is also a kind of optical illusion, lol. mainly a consequence of me being very prolific. and I mostly post when I think something is interesting and i've spent ~25 years doubling down on my interests. i dont have any interesting thoughts about say, banking/finance etc

The Dutch aren’t meant to be intellectuals. They are doers and traders. This also explains why a country of historically unparalleled wealth produced not a single world-renown writer. It is therefore highly jarring to hear the current, entirely leftwing, pseudo intellectual babble dominating the mainstream channels. The less the Dutch “intellectualize” - trying to reinvent the wheel or fix something that is not broken - the better, because all their “thinking” seems to produce is more and more “progressive” BS and it’s last thing this country needs. Simply maintaining what’s already there (“Je maintendrai”) would ensure absolute superiority of this country.

I say this w/ no joy at all but it seems to me that Dutch intellectual life is just as vapid & hollow as American intellectual life. America & the Netherlands are both “muh freedom” nations.

@eGeert @Porkchop_EXP @Zoldy95 @Jordi_roffa010 A scholar's primary occupation is researching, thinking, experimenting etc. Writing up this work is a means to an end: publication. And unless they specifically write for a general audience, their audience is other scholars. Writing is both the means and the end for writers.

humans default to the path of lowest resistance compilers have the advantage that they apply a lot of resistance, at times too much resistance, hence the appeal of LLMs, or natural-language-as-a-programming-language

and the syntactic rules matter too, from a UX POV. even if we assume that there is a way to prompt agents to produce predictable output (e.g. through spec languages), that LLMs allow arbitrary inputs means that they will not consistently be prompted in the right way
