@Keir_Starmer No, it is you with whom I am angry, Prime Minister. Disgusted, frankly. But also deeply disappointed. I had hoped you would show some vision, some leadership. But instead you drift toward a dismal corner of the political spectrum to please a minority of voters. You offer nothing.

I know you're angry about immigration. I get it. Mark my words: I will take back control of our borders. That means cutting migration, ending the use of asylum hotels, and ramping up our efforts to stop small boat crossings. We will smash the people smuggling gangs at source.

@elonmusk How about we get the transparency you promised? A log of the adjustments made to the algorithm over the past 12 months? You've created your own echo chamber. Blue ticks drowning out liberal voices with abuse and alternative facts. You don't pay to be heard in the town square.

More than half of American voters voted for Trump. He won the popular vote by a decisive margin! Cutting someone off just because they voted for the other candidate is close-minded and just plain mean.
Paul Graham@paulg

Don't do this. No matter how much you dislike Trump, don't do this. Half the people in America voted for Trump. If you think voting for Trump makes people evil, then you have to believe half the people in America are evil, and that's just deluded.

@LeMasterPlan @GregTSargent You give voters too much and too little credit. They remember Dems had control but don’t also remember that control was knife edge and two senators blocked it. More likely they simply didn’t feel the benefits they might have done.

@GregTSargent They had a modest social spending agenda, won the House and Senate in 2020, and then didn't pass it. Voters remember Dems had real opportunities to enact popular policy, but instead they chose to spend their political capital and tens of billions on two wars. Ads don't fix that.

There will be 1,000 post mortems that claim Dems didn't try to reach working class voters. But this is largely an evasion. It elides the tougher questions, which are: *Why* weren't working class voters moved by the most pro-labor admin in recent memory, by massive new investments in industrial policy, and by an immense effort to communicate all of this (and the realities of Trump's anti-worker agenda) to them? *Why* did working class voters prioritize inflation concerns over good economic policy (cc @ericlevitz)?
.@GregTSargent

This is sobering, but I have a sincere question about it: The Harris campaign/Ds ran over $200 million in ads about the economy. Much of this messaging *did* emphasize a specific program and *did* employ populist appeals. As @daveweigel reported, this stuff was *constantly* discussed on the stump and went largely unreported. The Q we need to ask is: *Why* didn't this break through w/working class voters? The claim that there was no effort to reach them elides this harder question.

@Michael_Wgd @DavidLammy Personally I would favour the term fascist as Nazi is too historically specific. He does seem to believe in genetic supremacy though, and very likely racial, but his animus is not aimed at jews. Hope that helps.

@AllyFogg Dunno about the panic. Didn't read anything about that. Didn't Trump and Vance do theirs in the last week too, or were they recorded earlier and broadcast in the last week?

@MontrealHicham @KenRoth @elonmusk Quite. Il capo talked big about the pubic town square and free speech, then pivoted to proganda, misinformation, and throttling engagement for voices that oppose him. It only remains significant if enough people are here and not elsewhere. Withdraw.

It is a mistake to leave Twitter/X out of outrage at @ElonMusk. Yes, his fact-free right-wing posts are infuriating, but this is still the most important social-media platform for politics. It is essential to influence the discourse, not abandon the field. axios.com/2024/11/07/elo…

@AbeGreenwald It is certainly the case that Trump voters are likely to believe demonstrably untrue assertions such as 'Kamal can't speak a full sentence off a teleprompter.'

Why not be honest? Most trump voters will wake up and say, “This guys is a mess, and I can’t believe the choice before me, but Kamala can’t speak a full sentence off teleprompter and I have no reason to trust anything she’s been a part of.” The world is more interesting when not viewed through a hysterical partisan prism.

Well it's official: the final polls of 2024 project out an electoral map that is the closest since at least 1972 with the leader (Harris) getting 270 electoral votes. The polls were tight at the end of 2000 too, but final map projected by the final polls was Gore at 281 votes.

from Philly courtroom — Musk lawyer says his $1m giveaway is NOT a lottery. "There is no prize to be won" and winners "are not chosen at random," Musk lawyer Chris Gober said. Instead, the $1m is a salary they "earn" to be a spokesperson for Musk's pro-Trump super PAC. Winners are picked based on their "suitability to serve" and their personal story, Gober said. In response, Philly DA team called this a "complete admission of liability" that Musk is running an illegal lottery under PA law. Remember: When Musk announced the giveaway.... in PA nonetheless.... he said, "we are going to be awarding $1 million randomly." DA showed this in court to the judge. Gober argued there's a difference between "randomly" and "by chance," which is why he argued that this isn't an illegal lottery under PA gaming laws.

@BrotherVonDoom @whstancil Someone as fundamentally crooked as DJT is a challenge to democracy—indeed, his supporters have very little interest in it—because if the evidence is sufficient to indict and the crime non-trivial, ‘the People’ cannot let it slide simply because he insists on running for office.

Trump in Pennsylvania says he shouldn’t have left the White House: “We had the safest border in the history of our country the day that I left. I shouldn't have left. I mean, honestly, because we did so, we did so well, we had such a great— so now, I mean every, every polling booth has hundreds of lawyers standing there. It’s all about the lawyers. Everybody’s sending lawyers. Nobody should have that.”

Got stuck at a networking event with a conservative woman that was voting for Kamala. You? Out of all people? I said why? Embarrassed she said for women’s rights. I asked her husband, and he sheepishly said Kamala. Remaining calm, I took the time to explain the abortion laws and explain it’s not what she has heard. She said she didn’t know all of this, and will research and change her vote for Trump if I was right. Husband fist bumped me and whispered thank you. Winning.

@real_defender @IAPolls2022 the fact that Trump outperformed the polls in the last two GE's has spooked the polling outfits: they don't want to get it wrong again and have weighted results accordingly, if anything numbers could be better for Harris, especially with their ground game, but we'll see
